For those of you have seen the BEST play in the world, this entry is for you. Even if you haven't seen it, I'll try and clear some stuff up for you on who the characters are, etc. I've found other entries comparing fun things line plays and movies, and Wicked is my next favorite thing next to Star Wars. I have a Wicked room, and then I have a Star Wars room. My iPod and my Agendas are decked out in both subjects, even how different they are, I've found some similarities to the Jedi.
For those of you that don't know what Wicked is even, it's an all-star play that won 13 major awards, including 4 Tony's and 1 Grammy. Wicked is about the back story of The Wizard of Oz. They explain the characters, the story, and how Dorothy's story was "exaggerated". It's a touching play, a funning play, and it also has GREAT music, I suggest you download "Defying Gravity" on your iPod, and listen to the end of it. Idina Menzel really hits the high not perfectly. Anyway, read this entry! Just sit back, relax, and read!
Galinda the Good (Later GLINDA the Good)
Kristin Chenowith plays Glinda, the bubbly blonde who's "Popular" and befriends everyone, is nice to everyone: except for Elphaba (read next character). Elphaba (know by Glinda as "Elphie") and Glinda both met at Shiz University, a college that they both attended. At first, everyone hated Elphaba because, well, she was green. Then, Glina gives her THE hat as a practical joke to wear to the dance that night at The Oz Dust Ballroom. When Elphaba recieves the hat, she loves it and wishes there was something she could do for Glinda (hence, why she has the pink wand...). She shows up at the dance and everyone laughs at her for being DIFFERENT. Elphaba dances real funny like she doesn't care what the other people think. Out of the blue, Glinda starts dancing with her, showing everyone how she LOVES Elphaba's outfitt, her hat, AND her cool moves. The become best friends because of this - and then it break into the famed song "Popular". Here's a quote:
" Elphie, now that were friends. I'd like to make you my new project. " -Glinda
" You really don't have to do that..." -Elphaba
" I know... that's what makes me so nice! " -Glinda.
After hearing this song for 1,000 times on end, I reliezed: Wow - it's like she's taking in a Padawan like in Star Wars! Glinda being the mentor, Elphaba being the Padawan. Glinda later teaches Elphaba how to "be" popular; whether it comes to the hair flip, shoes, or clothes. I thought about how the Jedi take in people who are gifted and talented (Elphaba was with magic, you gotta understand this) and teach them the ways of the Force (Glinda teaching Elphaba how to be "popular", when "she really doesn't have to do that") So I relate Glinda, oddly enough, to Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Elphaba (Later the Wicked Witch of the West)
As you read in my Glinda explination, I related Glinda to Obi-Wan Kenobi. Now, I relate Elphaba to Anakin Skywalker.
Some may ask, why? It's because Elphaba was "trained" by Glinda, as so was Anakin by Obi-Wan. And then, it is seemed that Elphaba "turns" on the Ozians, and Anakin turns to the dark side. Now, Elphaba isn't BAD: The Wizard of Oz was exaggerated! But, to me, neither was Anakin. Anakin turned to the dark side to save the ones he loved, and Elphaba wasn't evil either. Actually, it was her sister and Glinda. But that doesn't relate to Star Wars, but I still think the evilness does. Elphaba was under the power of the Wizard (sort of relates to Palpatine), and the Wizard made her LOOK bad. In Anakin's case, he WAS a baddie, but he did it for the ones her loved. Elphaba ends up losing her ONLY friend (Glinda), her sister (Nessa Rose: Wicked Witch of the East; falling house), and the trust from everyone. So I relate Elphaba to Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader.
The Wizard of Oz
In the REAL MOVIE VERSION of the Wizard of Oz, the Wizard is nice. He come across us being a nice guy, not a mean one, and we earn his trust for helping our faithful foursome (Dorothy, The Cowardly Lion, The Tin Man, and The Scarecrow). But now, we see the BACKSTORY of The Wizard of Oz, and we see he really was an evil wizard, not a good one. He manipulated talented people (Like Elphaba... for example), and told them they would be ALL POWERFUL, she'd learn the turst from the Ozians, be richs... heal her sister... we've heard it before, haven't we?
Palpatine is like this, too. He comes across as the protector of peace in the galaxy, he has wonderful ideas, etc etc... we, the audience, know that this is all a bunch of crap (excuse me...) because we see through him, and see his evilness. He later finds himself an appentice, Anakin, and manipulates him to join the Dark side to "save Padme". It's the same story for Elphaba: she thinks she's going to Oz to be FINALLY be recognized for a talent, and then everyone turns against her. This is why the Wizard is ultimatly EVIL, so I relate him to Palpatine.
So, Wicked can really be related to an all-star movie (Star Wars!) afterall! So for now, let's follow the yellow brick road instead of going to to a galxy far, far away...
