There are times I have wondered about certain devices in the Star Wars Galaxy, The Hydro Spanner is one ( Is it a Water Wrench?), None more so then the Motivator.
The first time we hear reference to this, is on the dusty planet of Tatooine where Luke exclaims to he's uncle "This Droid has a bad Motivator...Look" as though his uncle really needed his attention drawn to the Piston jutting out of the red and white druids head and the cloud of smoke arising from it to figure out there was a issue. The second time is in ESB when 3PO announces something like they had to replace the Negative energy coupling on the Hyperdrive Motivator.
What the heck is a Motivator, I have the image of a small, self aware piece of electronics...running off the power of positive energy ( please note...dripping sarcasim) telling the little druid "Go go go! You can do anything!!" or "You're the best Hyperdrive in the Galaxy, now lets do some Jumpn!!". Thus the thought of a bad motivator can be some what depressing, perhaps the Motivator has had a bad life experience or that the "Negative energy" was just to much for him and the lil guy has slipped into depression. I have visions of a Drunk Motivator proclaiming "ITS ALL ABOUT YOU!!! ALWAYS YOU!!" only to drop to the ground weeping, perhaps after years of therapy and maintenance these lil Motivators can once more return to the world and live semi normal electronic lives.
