 | Star Wars : For boys only !? |
Last sunday morning me and my friend Jackie were helping with children church . We were sitting with the kids at a couple tables and one 5 year old girl happened to see my ESB watch and said I was wearing a boys watch .
I said , " No I'm not , I'm wearing a Star Wars watch ."
" Star Wars is for boys " , she replied .
" No , its not ." , I answer .
" Yes , it is . " , she insists .
" No , its not . " , I counter.
( Yes , I know , I'm pathetic , argueing with a five year old , lol )
Meanwhile my friend Jackie is cracking up . I gave up argueing with the kid , there was really no point in continueing it . I was surprised that even at 5 years old , people think SW is not for girls .Which leads me to the question :
Why do people think it is so weird for a girl to be a SW fan ?
I don't see anything wrong with girls being SW fans , I mean , whats so weird about it ? So what if SW can be violent at times , we like violent movies ( sometimes anyway , or to a certain extent ) .
And girls LOVE romance and SW has that as well , that is a big reason why one of my friends adores AOTC ( and probably one reason she likes SW as much as she does and she likes it alot now )
My mother also told me of another incident .
She was at a store , buying SW stuff for my B-Day and said to the salesperson , " You'd never think this stuff was for a girl , would you ? " .
And the salesperson replied , " I thought this stuff was for a boy ."
Ah well , I guess people assume girls don't love adventure , fun , romance and all the other good things about SW . We shouldn't be considered weird for liking SW yet we are sometimes . If thats the way it must be then fine , I'll deal with it . SW is so worth it .
Thank you for reading this blog and comments are appreciated . I hope you enjoyed this blog .
May the Force be with us all

P.S. Girl SW fans RULE !!!!!!!

My little sister adores the ewoks, so she's also a huge Star Wars fan. Two of my favorite movies are Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast, which are not traditional "guy" movies per se, although Sleeping Beauty does feature the dragon fight. Star Wars is for anyone who wants to be a fan.

Hey, I'm a girl that's a fan of SW. To be honest, everytime I go into a bookstore and buy some SW books, the clerks always ask if I want it giftwrapped. In other words, they don't think I would ever buy anything SW for myself based on my looks.
It's just that most people assume girls should only care about so-called "girly" things like make-up and jewlery. Even my mom has always considered me a little crazy for being into this so-called "boy" thing. It's just people don't know what they having involved themselves in, I used to deem it a "boy" thing too. Now I learned, girls can have just as much fun with SW as a boy can.

Hi shatterpoint, good to hear from you!
I totally know what you mean. When people come to our house and see my SW things, they automatically assume it belongs to my boys or husband. When they find out otherwise, they look at me like I'm a weirdo and not because it's SW but because it's mine (a girl's). They had no problems with it being my husband's or son's!

Yea, never trust little girls. I've been outsmarted one too many times by 5 year old girls! Just kidding. Don't take whta they say seriously, however. They're just little. I think the people are being too general, to think that, but i'd be willing to bet that there are more guys that show their fandom than girls. I can sorta see where they got that idea. I'm not supporting them or anything, though.

Well, my girlfriend isn't really a fan, my ex and good friend is only really a PT fan, and only because of Hayden Christiansen topless at that, and my sister is a relative fan, but not overboard, unlike me. So I can sort of understand Jaden. Of course there's nothing wrong with a Star Wars fan, I suppose partly because, in general, it appears that Star Wars appeals more to the stereotypical boy than the stereotypical girl. But I disagree that Star Wars should be thought of as a single gender thing.

the "stereotypical" person does not exist!
I am also an SW fan and a girl. Nobody ever says anything weird to me when I get SW books, cuz the book store I shop at has mostly guys who seem to think it's pretty darn cool for a girl to be an obsessed SW fan. Alot of my friends (girls and guys) are into SW and Lord of the Rings. but of course, we're all home-schoolers and everyone knows home-schoolers could care less about other people's generalizations. none of the teens at my church get SW. not even the guys.

The government doesn't like the fact that girls CAN like SW. In my belief ANY guy to like SW but it takes a special girl to like it.( im not making fun im just stating that i think that if ur a girl and u like SW we r gonna be real good friends.)

I can't believe that it has come to this. Ladies should be (and are) Star Wars fans, and their is absolutely nothing wrong with that at all. The Saga, indeed, the entire SW universe is to be shared and discussed by all people, irregardless of gender, ethnicity, political positions, sexual alignment, etc....... as it should be. I'm glad that the female SW population has finally gotten a voice in this blog, because I havent seen many female fans yet, but are looking forward to holding discussions with this growing group of dedicated fans about their love for Star Wars, which brings all of us to this website.
Ladies, May the Force be with you......always.

I think that girls are afraid to speak up about their love for Star Wars because they are afraid that their friends would think less of them. I say that if they don't like you because you like something then they aren't true friends!

Star Wars is for girls, boys, aliens, cats and dogs etc. Although I am not a girl, I think that it doesn't matter who you are, if you like it, GOOD!!!! I think that it is a wrong statement to say that Star Wars is just for boys.

I totally get what your saying Shatterpoint! I don't understand while some people think it is so weird for girls to be fans of star wars. The other day I was looking through the ROTS figures before they would be gone and I was getting tbhe weirdest looks from little kids...I dosen't make sense. I cant think of one reason why girls shouldn't like star wars.

There isn't. One of the strengths of SW is the strong female characters. Leia and Padme are important to the story and respected by their peers. They're intelligent, thoughtful, kind and caring. Although they're both beautiful, they are not valued for their beauty. They're valued for who they are. Now compare Padme and Leia to MJ from Spider-Man. Her sole purpose is to stand there, look pretty, and scream when the villain attacks.

Great blog, I know what you mean. Someone really needs to start telling people that SW is for EVERYONE! JadenNightsaber is right, I think it takes girls a little more courage to say that there a SW fan. I don't know why, that just seems to be the case.
Your story was great. There's a boy in the Sunday school class I helped teach last summer, and he's a SW fan. At children's church a few weeks ago I was helping him do his craft and he saw my Rebel Alliance symbol pin. He gasped in surprised and whispered "That's Star Wars!" When I said yes he promptly asked me if he could have it. When I said no, he made a dissapointed face and pulled my Padawan braid.

I agree with you a gazillion percent. My mom hates me loving Star Wars because she thinks it's for boys as well, which is wrong. Girls have every right to like Star Wars. If I were a boy maybe I'd have a little picture of Darth Vader by my name..but I don't. Lol. I think my mom has something against me loving Star Wars just because I'm a girl, and she thinks I shouldn't be interested in that stuff. I don't have friends that like Star Wars really, so I rely on the internet for that, lol. And from what I've seen some of the most hardcore Star Wars fans are girls. Maybe not many, but there's quite a few informative female fans.

It's a shame that people assume Star Wars is just for boys... and boys is the key word. Most people who look older than their mid-teens are seen as weird for buying Star Wars anything, unless buying from a comic shop or other specialised store that deals with geeky material.
It shouldn't happen, Star Wars is for anyone who likes it, regardless of age, gender, and species (one of my lizards likes it... but that could just be the pretty flashing colours... he also enjoys watching Jerry Springer ).
In the end, I think your final comment sums everything up pretty well. "If thats the way it must be then fine , I'll deal with it . SW is so worth it ." Just be happy with who you are.

nobody told me (also a girl) that SW was for boys when i was 6. but then again i was also considered a tom boy.
its unfortunate, but its sort of true that there is some sort of conditioning that exists. but then again, i feel sort of special when i go to the bookstore to pick up a SW book, and a bunch of nerdy boys step back and gasp. its like i set off the girl alarm. LOL - plus (as i said in johnnage's blog), we girls are exempt from being called geeks and nerds as far as fandom goes.

as to my first line above... i meant no one told me SW was for boys when i was 6 and playing with action figures and ships, etc... but that was back in the late 70s through the 80s with the OT. tom boy was cooler then. it seems now adays that young girls are "girlier" than ever. some 8th graders look like they are in college i swear! that is "look" NOT act and think.

Now THAT is one brainwashed kid! It's like girls are "forbidden" to be Star Wars fans. All the kids except for one or two ridicule people for liking Star Wars, but I really don't care. We female Star Wars fans MUST stick up for ourselves! Now, for most girls, you have to follow the group, wear enough makeup to drown yourself when you are 14, & think that boys are cute. Yada Yada Yada. What a load of JUNK! It's all about peer pressure nowadays......

Haha, I'm not afraid to show my Star Wars obsession at all. Not even in school. I have a Darth Vader day planner, Star Wars pencil case, and my class folders are full of Star Wars drawings on the front. And it's stupid, but I carry a little Vader saber in my purse (don't even ask) along with the current SW book I'm reading (if it'll fit, lol), so if I like it I'm not afraid to show it. But a lot are, unfortunately.

I'm with you all the way shatterpoint! I'm not a girl but I too have heard this crazy idea that sw is just a guy thing. I for one think that it is a stupid idea and is not true at all! I myself have not met a girl sw fan before but thanx to this site, I've had the pleasure of talking to many such ladies. I think it is for everyone, no matter of race, gender or age! I would love to meet a female sw fan one day but don't know if that will happen. Luckly, I'm a film student at Columbia of Chicago and there are many sw fans here, which is great but I have still yet to meet a female one. I don't know if there are any or not but I do thing that people have had it put into there heads that sw is just a guy thing over the years.

ok, I didn't read the comments but here is my thought: most girls (or the stereotype girl) like to watch chick-flick movies and won't go outside and play and do nails and hair all the time as hobbies (I sadly know a few of these girls). So when someone finds out that a teenage girl likes a movie that is primarily science fiction instead of romance or cartoons or something, it's really astonishing. So they think it's strange.
Anyways, good blog, and STAR WARS IS FOR GIRLS!!!

And I love wearing my Burger King SW watches! Different one for each day! Cool!
