Last night I was watching the Olympic Games on tv. The only reason I was watching was because there was a figure skating even scheduled to be on that night, the pairs freeskate ( final). To my relief, the two american teams that entered performed well, with only one fall occuring between the two teams. In the short program one of the teams ( Rena Inoue and John Baldwin ) attempted to make history by landing the first throw triple axel in Olympic history. They succeeded and the triple axel was perfectly clean, very well done. They tried it again in the freeskate and unfortunately failed in their attempt and they ended up in 7th place in the final standings.
Sometime later, there was only one team left to skate, Dan and Hao Zhang ( no, they are not related nor married.) They had decided to attempt a throw quadruple salchow, had they landed it it would have been the first successfully landed quadruple throw ever landed in competition. Sadly, their attempt failed badly, she fell very hard onto her knees. (And keep in mind, this girl is like a toothpick, so very skinny)
Dan Zhang got up and tried to keep skating but it was too painful, her partner had to skate over to her and hold her by the waist. They tried to keep going but she was in too much pain. They skated over to the boards where their coaches were. It appeared she was hurt too badly to continue the program.
Then something happened that amazed me. After a couple of minutes, she wiped her tears and skated back to center ice with her partner. They were allowed to continue from the point where they she had fallen, which was only a few seconds into the program.
Dan and Hao Zhang both landed their side by side double axel - triple toe loop combination, all I could do was clap and stare at the tv in amazement. That girl was so incredibly brave, despite the great pain she was in, she pushed through and she completed the program. Their performance was quite good, especially considering the pain she was in.
They ended up winning the silver medal, behind the Russian team of Tatiana Tomiana and Maxim Marinen ( hehe, I'm pretty sure I spelled that wrong) and they finished ahead of the other two chinese pairs ( one of which won the bronze).
Never say that figure skating is not a tough sport, that girl was in a great deal of pain yet she fought through and completed the program, landing some jumps and doing many difficult maneuvers. She showed some real Olympic spirit, I have to admire her for that. She went out in front of the world and performed two difficult programs with her partner and did well, despite becoming injured in the freeskate.
Dan Zhang proved her quality, not only as a athlete but as a person. I congratulate her and Hao Zhang for their Olympic silver medal, they truly earned it.
Here is a excellent article about what happened
Thank you for reading this blog and comments are appreciated.

Thanks for writing about this! I'm sad to say for some reason I'm just not excited about the Olympics this year... I don't know why, it's just boring to me. But your entry makes me want to watch something on TV besides "Dancing with the Stars." So thanks...
also, just in case you're interested, we'll be profiling Olympic fencer Keeth Smart on Star Wars Rocks section in the next few weeks.

I saw that live yesterday too!
That's what the olympics are about, courage, honor, giving the best and NEVER giving up. In four years time, people will remember this chinese couple even more than the Russian that won the gold.
And the Russians do deserve the gold. They won fair and square, but the Chinese couple made history yesterday.
Great blog, and thanks!

BAD crashes in the luge for women yesterday and today. Hope they're all fine. And one big crash in Alpine skiing, or at least the only one I saw.
And BTWm Curling should NOT be considered a sport!

That was Hongbo Zhao, he got bronze with his partner Xue Shen yesterday, that was their second Olympic bronze medal. 4 years ago Xue and Hongbo attempted a throw quad at the olympics and she nearly had it, she landed but then fell , though not as hard as Dan Zhang did yesterday.
And the Russians do deserve the gold. They won fair and square, but the Chinese couple made history yesterday.
Yes they did deserve it though I was hoping Shen and Zhao would win.( they have such a great story, look them up on google sometime)

So true and in 4 years that pair will probably be competing , they are still young ( 20 and 21)
Thank you all for the kind comments.

I love the story. To me its what the Olympics are about. It reminds me of many years ago when a track participant fell in the 400? and he got up in terrible pain but was limping on to the finish. His father then came out and put his arm around his son's shoulders and helped him finish the race. It still gives me chills thinking about it with the huge stadium on their feet applauding and cheering the last place contestant. First place in my book. Amazing the skaters came back to win Silver. Great blog.

Great blog. I watched last night too. Funny you mention this topic. I am in the middle of writing a blog about Olympic Athletes and the Jedi. Olympics are related to SW. Think of all the political pull governments have on the athletes and the Olympics. Similar to the political pull on the Jedi. That is only one similarity between the two. I don't want to spoil my blog as I spent half of last night working on it. I hope to post it by tomorrow morning. I'm still learning about this blog thingy, since I'm a new member. And it will be my first blog. Thought I would pick a safe topic to start out with...it won't be about politics.

I saw that last night. I was crying when the couple won the silver (sorry, I'm emotional when it gets to figure skating, specially after the Jamie Salle and David Pelletier thing). Not only did they skate amazingly, but the girl had to endure the pain of her injury while doing all the other moves. She deserved a medal just for showing the olympic spirit and getting out there after her fall with the inmense pain she must have been feeling, even more after the amazing performance she gave. See, this is what the olympics are all about, not sports, but stories of human courage and determination.

Yeah, that really was amazing, wasn't it? I was surprised they were able to continue at all, but when I saw them nail the 2axel-3toe, the hardest jump combo in the competition, like nothing had never happened... just wow. I have never seen a more gutsy performance in figure skating, and that girl has my eternal respect. It just showed how well-trained they were, physically and especially mentally. The silver medal was well-deserved.

Nice blog! I didn't watch the Olympics Monday night (I had to watch the Westminster Dog Show to root for the Pug!) but that is a very inspiring story you have related here. I'm going to go check out that article now. Thanks!

Jedipug1 Oh my gosh, lol, monday I flipped on the westminster dog show in time to see the pug win the toy group, I was so happy Dermot won, but was sad last ntie to see him lose. Ah well, he was adorable.
Also, yesterday I found out that chinese girl, Dan Zhang says she regrets having not skated better. I couldn't help but cry a little when I heard that.
Thanks for all the kind comments everyone.

I was a bit sad about it but I had been watching the mens olympic short program ( figure skating) and one of my faves , Johnny Weir, skated very well and ended up in 2nd so far, tomorrow is the second program, I can't wait. I wasn't too bummed bout Dermot simply cuz the figure skating had made me so happy.
All in all, Dermot was my best in show that nite, he was so freakin cute, I think I may want to get one of his puppies, he is a beautiful dog.

I must say I haven't been paying much attention to the olympics, and I have no clue why. I really liked watching the ones in Salt Lake city. Even though I did watch two hockey games that were on TV, I just didn't watch them like I should have.
