Theatrical Viewings
The number of times I've seen each film in the theater and some impressions:

ANH: 5. I saw the rerelease prior to Empire's release and the second rerelease before Jedi came out. I saw the Special Edition two or three times.

ESB: 5. Twice in its original run, and three times for the Special Edition (SE). The SE viewing was one of my favorite SW moments. The theater was packed for opening night. I could feel the mix of the crowd of old fans, latecomers, and new blood. I had already determined that this was my favorite of the films and knew well why. I was very happy to be seeing it again on the big screen. The audience was acting like it did during ANH's SE, talking back to the screen, excited, caught up in the action. Then, something wonderful happened. Degobah sobered people a bit. It's slow-moving, but it's the heart of the films. From the time Vader knelt before the Emperor to say, "What is thy bidding, my master?" and especially after Han was frozen, I looked around and saw that all activity had stopped. The audience was transfixed, staring slack-jawed at the screen as the movie built toward its finish. I was pleased. Perhaps they came in for some fun and not really taking it seriously, but the last fourth of Empire is the best of the series and difficult to ignore. It took the unaware by surprise. All of the elements: acting, plot, effects, music, drama, scope, etc., were perfected into a blend that hasn't been reproduced since. I revisited my 8-year-old self and crawled in my seat as Luke made his way to the end of the gantry above the abyss.

RotJ: 4? I saw it at least twice in 1983 and once when the SE was released. Everyone emerged saying it was "so cool!" but I stood outside the theater waiting for my parents to pick up me and my friends and felt a distinct sense of letdown. It was all there, just like I hoped, but it wasn't until years later when I was able to analyze the great points and weak aspects of Jedi.

PM: Oh boy. 11 times. Yes, 11 times. I had waited long and hard for this movie, and I was determined to absorb every detail, Easter egg, and nuance. I went alone or grabbed anyone I could take to see it. I was awed by it as much as I was disappointed. What I concluded was, yes, it's Star Wars. The parts that work, work very well. The parts that are lacking are VERY lacking, and I felt let down. I still do. It's a good movie, but I watch it and think about what could have been. Then I can think of it from my daughter's point of view and in the context of a six-movie series, and it feels perfect. So, what is it? It works as a Star Wars film but is not a Great Film.

AotC: 3? I saw it at least twice in the normal theater. Then I saw it in Ann Arbor MI on the IMAX screen. That was dazzling. I knew I liked this one better than PM, but I still walked away with a sense of loss.

RotS: 3 (so far) First off, why hasn't Sith received the IMAX treatment? I'm hungry to see this glorious film again. Each time I've see I'm more impressed and moved by it. It's relentless in being upbeat and tragic. It quickly became my #3 favorite.

Star Wars: I haven't seen it yet. No, not A New Hope, but Star Wars, George Lucas' 15-hour saga. I can't wait until Sith is released on DVD and my friends and I can watch the entire story of Anakin Skywalker and the rise and fall of the Galactic Republic. Then I can be cheeky. If any asks me which is my favorite, I'll answer, "The whole thing."

I think George would like that.
