This Steven Levy article from
Wired breaks down how easily we humans get acclimated to the "new norm."
Particularly insightful is his comment about how he found himself complaining because his Flip video recorder didn't have built-in image stabilization. I immediately recognized myself in that. I've been salivating about a handheld phone-slash-computer since the mid '90s, but after an initial burst of iPhone squee it quickly became just another part of the status quo.
Let's face it, this is the equivalent of a Star Trek tricorder here, but it's fascinating how quickly we all go "meh." I get annoyed when
Shazam can't identify that song in the bar, rather than gaping in awe that I have a freaking
song-identification machine in my jacket pocket.
Ultimately I think this is a great thing. As a species, when we get bored, we create. And we get bored often.
