I've been lax in blogging, but I came across a year-old question
today in the fanfic thread, and ending up answering it at length. Three posts worth. (FYI, The lack of a word limit is officially the only thing I miss about being a mod here.) Anyway, it was a question worth answering.
Some time ago in that thread, I recommended Livejournal, rather than Blogger, as the blog client of choice for fanfic writers. I still do. Though
Star Wars fandom hasn't taken off there as much as other fandoms have, there are several features that make it an ideal place for fanfic. There is an existing community of fanfic writers - from several fandoms. There are several communities in place for sharing them. (If you have an LJ, I recommend friending the fandom newsletter,
Jedi News. It will link you daily to relevant news, stories and discussion.) And the system of communities is well suited to the different corners of a huge fandom. Plus, the
LJ-cut, which makes story comms and journals neat and clean-looking.
Though it's active enough, LJ is not a huge center of SW fanfic. That honor goes to TFN's
TFN's fanfic forum. Most of the best stuff is here. It can be a pain the browse, but often worth it. (I have little use for their
'official' archive, but it's a good place to start for new readers and the stories picked are generally considered above average.) The boards are extremely active and many readers and writers flock there. This would be my first stop if you're even remotely serious about SW fanfic.
Livejournal is second. The general fanfic comms are
starwars_fanfic,
sw_fictorium, and
swfanfic. Poke around the userinfo of authors you like (or
naboonotes, which as the Jedi News watcher comm has nearly every SW comm friended) to find character and pairing specific communities.
swrecs is a good place for recommendations and requests. I wouldn't recommend this as your only stop, but it's a good feather to have in your cap.
And finally,
Fanfiction.net. This one is probably the best for newbies, but it's not really considered that highly among established fanfic writers/readers. (Though, the
best fic I'm following right now does
originate here, so there are certainly exceptions to every rule.)
There are of course specific message boards and mailing lists for different subsets of fandom, but these are the biggies. I would recommend posting your stories on at least two of them - all three reach different, though often overlapping fanbases.
Any questions? Post and I'll try my best to answer!
P.S.: Most of the tips in
a beginning writer's fanfic primer still apply.
