I don't think it is any real surprise to anyone to say that I am a huge Star Wars fan. Make no mistake: I'm a fanboy. I have a collection last valued at over $50,000 that has doubled in size since that time. I have bought several trivia books just to make sure I knew everything (guess
what I do). That being said I really liked the new Star Trek movie...and First Contact, and Nemesis (although those happened because there was nothing else on the movie channels. Damn you Starz!).
I know, calm down, it's not that big a deal. In fact that's what I am here to do. I am officially calling a truce between the Trekkers and Star Wars fanboys. Call me crazy but I am doing it.
It's time to end this so-called feud and begin to celebrate the one important thing: science fiction. I blogged previously about how sci-fi and fantasy are beginning to take hold with a more mainstream audience, but if we want to continue to see large scale space epics continue to be made (and with the budget they deserve) we need to set aside our differences and come
together for support. If a movie is good, there is no reason to not see it.
Hell, the latest Star Trek revamp was written and directed by guys who confessed to being huge Star Wars fans (talk about crossing over). Besides I love seeing space ships battle it out with lasers and
explosions, and I am not particular on what ships they are.
I love big-budget special effects, especially when they are put towards a space, sci-fi setting. I went to see the new Trek because it looked fun and it held the same fun crazy action of a Star Wars movie. As Star Wars fans with no new movies coming out and only a cartoon show and live action show still two years away (at least) we need something to fill the space
action void. Star Trek is finally cool again and a valid outlet.
I am not saying everyone should switch camps altogether. Believe me I still don't particularly want to go to a Star Trek/Wars convention (we don't have to merge everything), but us nerds should be a little more open minded. I am not going to start a Star Trek collection or anything like that, but I will watch the new movies and enjoy them without feeling dishonest to my side.
We need to support Sci-Fi. If that means Trekkers have to watch a few episodes of the Star Wars show, so be it. If that means fanboys have to watch a new Trek movie, so be it. But we need to support the genre before the studios decide those types of movies don't need big budgets or just don't need to be at all. Long live the sci-fi!
If some of the references to other blogs don't make sense, sorry, I pulled this from my website because I wanted to share it with you guys. Be sure to check out some of my non-Star Wars based blogs
HERE . I would greatly appreciate your support.
Until next time!
