I've recently just gratuated from Alfred University this past December with a degree in Fine Arts. My concentration was video and photography. It's hard not to say that Star Wars was a huge influence. But I'm here to discuss and art project that me and my friend worked on at college. Now this project was kind of spur of the moment, but the results were amazing.
Our video teacher junior year asked if we'd be willing to hang around the studio durring open house for perspective students. We decided to make it a big edidting and play day in the video studio. So I brought all my video games and movies and we filtered through them thinking of a quick idea. Then of course we stumble on my Star Wars SE VHS tapes and my 2 DVDs of Ep. 1 & 2. Our eyes light up. The idea was brilliant, this would be the only source material we needed. So we pop them into a variety of decks. Ep 1 to DVD 1 Ep 2 to DVD 2 EP 4 to VHS 1 and so on. Of course we were short ROTJ seeing I was stupid and left it in my VCR back in my dorm. But no worries the 2 hours or so of fun was about to begin. We had two movies sent to one analog mixer and the other two sent to another. Then of course pushed play on all fourl at once.
Seeing four video signals show the same exact blue text saying the words "A long, long time ago in a Galaxy Far Far Away..." is interesting considering that the original trilogy was in full screen where the prequals were in widescreen so the text was slightly off as was the music by like a few seconds. So I can't say it was perfectly in sync, but that even made it more interesting.
So we go through almost the entire saga of Star Wars all at once seeing diolouge match up with scenes form other movies that were hilarious. Hearing Jawas screaming and talking while your seeing those slug like things form Episode 2. Watching the conversation between Jengo and Obi-wan but then only hearing the audio of the diolouge between Han and Leia talking about dirty hands, oddly the dialouge almost lyp synced. It definately an entertaining experience even if it is a little hectic at times. of and course we were doing effects and stuff, like chroma keying and inverting colors. Like I said we were just playing , But we ended up with some awesome visuals this way.
But the most important thing we discovered was the overlay of two scenes from two different movies. The scene that shows Anakin leaving his mother and the scene where Anakins mother dies happens at the exact same time, are exact same length, and are almost shot similar. Even the diolouge seems to play off eachother. Now the big question is...was it a coincidence or was the editing crew at Lucasfilm consious of it so that crazy video artist star wars fans could notice? Thoughts anyone? or maybe at least comments on the idea of this project. This eventually spawned a show called Machines the Trilogy where we did the exact same thing to 3 movie trilogies: The Matrix, Terminator, and Robocop. We then projected them on a huge wall. Imagine watching and hearing 9 movies at once on only 3 projectors. Suprisingly the show was big hit. Which prompted us into doing a live OT mix for our senior show. But I think it's time to end this looong entry. Thank you for your time...
