 | The Force Is Back! There Goes My Finances! |
The Star Wars rut I was experiencing is over! Finishing Betrayel and getting sucked into Bloodlines and flying through it in 2 weeks was an amazing return to the GFFA. Add the addition of the Legacy comics, and my return to the Message Boards, I can finally feel the force run through me again. Which feels wonderful but worries me as well.
With such a Star Wars adrenaline rush, I'm not sure my finances can support it. I've suddenly had temptations to buy things that seem nescarry to full fill my Star Wars obbsesion. I almost spent 500 dollars on a halloween cosutme. Which wouldn't had been as horrible as my freind spending 2000 on stomtrooper armor. But I've always been proud of resisting Star Wars merchendise. But now with Celebration 4 opening registration, I have lots debates in my head.
Is it worth almost 500 dollars just to attend the event? Thats of course not including stuff that I buy there, food, and the time that I'd take off of work( I also consider this a loss of money). It probably would result way over 1000. Consisdering my position in my life..."a post college graduate living at home not quiet sure what he's doing with his life"...is it good for me to be on such a Star Wars binge? Sure my idea of a binge is nothing compared to some people. But to me savings are very important to me right now. But Star Wars is hugely important as well! The convention sounds like it be worth the price so much. But I'm also being mindful of the future like Yoda taught. Or should I listen to Qui Gon and listen to the living force instead?
Heh the more I type this for more I lean to the temptation...is that Sith of me?

I had a co-worker today stop by my desk to admire my Star Wars collection. He was very impressed and simply said, "You do know that I've been told those Star Wars Conventions are suppose to be a whole lot of fun". I replied by saying, "Yeah, I know and I'm going next year."
If you budget and plan correctly you won't spend over $500. That means finding roommates for the hotel cost and eating a lot of crappy junk food. It can be done. Let the Force quide you.

Hmm only 500? According to my Calculations...its 110 for tickets and so far the lowest flight I can find is 330 dollars. Then theres the Hotels. I'm not sure what the discounted price is, but lets say its around 80 bucks a night....sure if I shared the room with lets say only 1 other....and idealy stayed for 6 nights. thats still 240. So far Just getting there and back plus the cost of staying is already 680. so lets say for 6 days of food saying I spend at the most of 20 dollars a day. that be another 120. Then I cant go to a convention without buying some kind of souveniors and merchendise. So lets say I hopefully limit myself to 100 dollars, and thats being horribly strict with myself. (cont.)

(cont.)Then finally I consider this a cost as well Id have to request pretty much a full week off of work which would result in another 300-400 loss. So I would lose an average of 1200 dollars. Course thats not considering a cosutme that I dont have. Sure this might be looking too detailed into things....And a part of me says Screw it your only 23, you can save money later in life. But I this voice nagging back in my head. I truly believe my mom implanted that voice into me.

I don't consider the trip a loss of money. We are supposed to use our money wisely but when you can't part with it even to have a good time every now & again..I mean money isn't everything. You've got to live once in a while. Your only 23, and you worry way to much about money. I live in Florida and I figure $1000 tops for the whole trip and if I spend a little more so be it. I splurge every now & again.

If you can get to C4 on $500, that's amazing! I'm probably going to spend $1,300 because I'm going all by myself (I don't know ANYONE else who would even think about going) and I'm planning to stay an extra day or two to see the city. BUT, I've been waiting for this day my whole life...so I wouldn't miss it for anything! Hopefully you make it- see you there?

BTW, I did not like Bloodlines.
Actually I'm curious as well why you didn't like Bloodlines as well. I thought it was amazingly written.
Hopefully you make it- see you there?
If I can convince someone to go with me I'll definately try to find you amongts the thousands of people!

I'll be there!! Mina and I will be bunking together ~ we've already got that planned! Yea!
Anyway, the way I look at it is that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! This is THE 30th anniversary of the Original release of the saga! AND it's happening in LA of all places!! I, personally, just can't pass up this chance! I'm saving every penny for it and I'm going to blow it ALL on the convention! THEN, I'll start saving again for whatever else.
Again, since you are only 23, you can start saving for the future after that, but as a SW fan, this is THE event!
Do as you will, but I'M not passing this up!! No way, no how!!

To go or not to go, that's the question
I am...was on the same boat. Now, I've hyped myself and my sister so much in this opportunity to see California, so that there is no question, but I'll be spending most of my vacation time next year (over two weeks) on this trip, not to mention money. But as my mother (who is pretty wise) says, you can't take money with you from this world, so you better enjoy it while you still have it. Though...Yoda might disagree and want me to do something productive for mankind with it...but then again, SW is pretty positive force on Earth
