 | I'm not a geek. The proper term is fan boy! |
 Wow,
In no short order I've been welcomed by a few different people who have taken the time to say hello. Thank you again!
Now that I know there will actually be some people reading this stuff from time to time, I have to be careful about what I say
And I should probably add a warning; I have a tendency to be very long winded!
See? I'm already four lines in and I haven't even established my topic yet.
Well, this seems like just as good a place as any to talk about something that probably affects a lot of Star Wars fans (and more likely those who love it enough to be part of the fan club and write on here). That's that pesky 'Star Wars geek' label.
Labels, to begin with, are stupid. Human beings (myself included of course) seem to have an insatiable need to label things, and not just things, but other people. To box people in, categorize them into headings and subheadings. He's a geek. She's a goth. That guy's a jock. You're a liberal. I'm a conservative, etc etc.
When it comes to hobbies, especially those involving fantasy, science fiction, comics, games, whatever, the geek word gets thrown around a lot. We've all heard the cliches. "Episode 3 was released today, and throughout the world millions of unwashed geeks emerged from their mother's basements'.
Ah the mother's basement, the bedrock of geek stereotyping.
Well, I don't really want to believe that something as complex as a human being can be summed up in one word. And I certainly don't think that just because someone likes Star Wars (or Star Trek, though I personally can't stand it!) or anything else that doesn't meet with approval from the 'cool people', he is a geek, period, end of story.
Listen, I went to see Episode 3 not once, not twice, but a very fitting three times on opening day with my best friend. The day before that, we sat down and watched the OT, then Eps 1 and 2, then the clone wars cartoons to prepare ourselves for the holy experience that was ROTS. A whole shelf of my book case is dedicated to star wars novels. Another shelf is dedicated to books spun off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel (the works of Joss Whedon hold just as dear a place in my heart as Star Wars, fyi). I could name at least 10 Star Wars planets without stopping to think.
But I'm not a geek. And neither are you, unless for some reason you decide to believe that you are.
Geek is just a word. I play hockey, I go to the gym 5 days a week, but I'm not a jock. Jock is just a word too. Unlike that non existent 'typical geek' with the unwashed hair, the food stained shirt and the mom's basement, I have had a couple girlfriends in my life! I'm willing to bet you have too. Or boyfriends, for the girls reading. Or vice versa, if that's your thing. It's all good.
My point is, I don't accept the label of geek just because I love Star Wars. I don't accept any label. I ask people to call me by my given name (or a nickname chosen with humor and affection) and accept me for who I am, everything I am, which very much includes Star Wars.
So my words of unwisdom for whoever reads this would be, if at any time some unenlightened person has tried to condemn you and your hobbies with the 'g' word, shrug it right off.
We're not geeks. We're all just people.
But if you must.... call me a fan boy!

I think the reason why people use labels is a simple one...it's easier that way to keep everything in order. That person's this, that is that...and often I think it's unfair, and I hate to say this, but most people do it. If it's something racial, that's just totally wrong. But if it's something lighter, like referring to someone based on the entertainment they like, then so be it. I think a while ago, us StarWarsies started to claim words like "geek" or "nerd", and say, "So What". Someone at work called me a Star Wars Nerd, and I just replied, "So?".
I guess it just doesn't bother me. Great Entry!!!

It's terribly sad what the world has come to in this respect. The unending need to classify people, I think, is disgusting. Also, I think it started with people in positions of "power" (i.e. 'cool' people) wanting to exert their superiority by calling people "below" them geeks, nerds, etc.
We're all just people.
I've been saying that for years, especially after being bullied and persecuted for liking the things I like (i.e. Star Wars, Star Trek - sorry buddy but it's awesome!, BSG, etc.). Just because I don't play sports and I get good marks in school doesn't mean I'm a lesser person.

I find it really sad that people feel the need to categorize just to feel superior. And yes, I realize that we all do it, myself included, but the people that make a huge deal of it and intentionally hurt people. And yes, I speak from experience.

I think the best way to squash these misconceptions is to simply be proud of who you are, and not let people know that it bothers you (if it even does, of course). If it doesn't do anything to do, then the people that say it won't continue, because nothing comes of it. Now, having gone through all that I've gone through in the past several years, I'm not afraid to express who I am.

I just tell people about me, and I don't care what flash opinion they make of me. People have to deal with my likes and my personality. Then, when people try to say these kinds of things to me, they know that it doesn't bother me at all, and they stop doing it.
I think that if more people did this, then the world would change greatly. For the better.

That's okay. A lot of us here have this tendency (myself included).
Labels, to begin with, are stupid.
Yes they certainly are. Labels are for jars. The thing about labels that I mainly don't like is the fact that labels don't allow for individuality. We're all different, but if we're grouped together with a bunch of other people who are like us how does that make us different? Then there's those who don't seem to fit under any label. If you think about it, labels for people just don't make sense.

Too right! I have friends too!
People label people because it makes things easier and makes life seem simpler. With over 6bn unique people in the world, it can seem a lot easier to group a lot of them together, based on arbitary criteria, such as which films they like.
Good blog.

Good post ... I think what adds to the stereotype of a "Star Wars geek" is other shows / media that make fun of fans like us. I am proud to tell people I am a fan of Star Wars, and I love to get into discussions about it. And it's great when I come across someone who's as passionate about it as I am, like at work. There's a few of us who have daily conversations about SW ... it's great!

This is a great entry! As far as stereotyping, I would say ,"So what?" I love Star Wars, always have, always will. And the rest of my life is going just fine, thank you very much. I married a beautiful woman (a cheerleader, ha!), have two great kids, own my own business, and I own the basement (it's an office) where I'm writing at this moment. On the wall...framed script facsimiles from Ep. IV, V, & VI!
The best revenge is living well- apart from the Revenge of the Sith, of course!
Way to be Darth_Chamby!

Well, I don't really want to believe that something as complex as a human being can be summed up in one word.
An assumption, no less! I agree with what you're saying, but I feel like over the past few years, I've moved to a place where I can take (much of) the criticism and labeling because I know I'm a well-rounded person. Weirdo, yes, but a well-rounded one.
Listen, I went to see Episode 3 not once, not twice, but a very fitting three times on opening day
Me too!!! Midnight, 3:30am, and 7pm! It was quite a ride!!

Human is technically one word......and yet we still use it.
You shouldn't let words affect you so much. I'm a geek, and I'm proud of it. I tell people I am one all the time, I read Star Sars, watch Star Sars and even play Star Wars.....sometimes I just like to hear Star Wars too. That makes me a geek.

While being a geek is just ONE aspect of my life, I am still however, a geek. I'm just a lot of other things too! When someone calls me a Star Wars geek.....I don't get upset.....I get excited because I'm being reminded that there are SO many other people who share my passion. Being an individual is great, but I like being apart of things too!
I'm a Star Wars geek, a Rent-head, an outdoorsman, hell, I'm even a trekkie to an extent!
While I agree that stereotypes can be bad......obviously.....I'm not gonna lie, I laughed when I heard the line about basements. It seemed funny, it still does.

Personally, I think there's nothing wrong with labels. People are social animals, and we tend to group together with other people who have the same interests: sports, religion, Star Wars, whatever. Labels just help us identify those groups and differentiate them from one another. The problems start when people try to use the label in a degenerative fashion; two problems arise.
First is the stereotypes. Remember, stereotypes start because they generally FIT. There's at least a bit of truth to them, or they wouldn't catch on. But just because they may describe the majority of a group, doesn't mean they describe EVERYONE. As has been said, everyone is different. Thank the Maker. Otherwise life would be VERY boring.

han_n_leia
|

The second problem is when people are ONLY tagged as belonging to one group. Everyone can simultaneously be classified in many ways: I'm a Catholic (kind of... really consider myself more of a Jedi Knight ); I'm also a hockey player (go Darth C!) and yes, a Star Wars GEEK. It's this fact that means any one stereotype about a given group is inherently flawed, because not all members of that group also belong to all the other same groups (hope this made sense!).

I think the bottom line is that, for a label to be considered derogatory, the target of the label must think that it's degrading. As mentioned above, I, for one, am proud to be a SW GEEK. So call me one all you want. I don't care. And by not caring, I remove any type of control you tried to gain by belittling me. As I learned when I was a kid,
"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me."

Sorry for the rant. Touched on one of my pet peeves. I think we all need to grow thicker skin and learn to deal with adversity a little better. Life's not easy. So someone called you a name in order to make themselves feel better. So what?? Life goes on. Get over it, and move on with your life. You'll find that in the long run you'll be the better man (or woman) for it.

Nice blog.
I don't mind if people label me a Star Wars geek, the people I interact with know who I am and what sort of person I really am. For those who don't know me, if they feel better about themselves for labeling me a geek than so-be-it...odds are they can be labeled as well
I enjoy the SW community and those who make it up...hooray for the geeks

Darth-Chamby, what you said in that blog is unbelievable. Why you might ask? Because If you wrote this blog way in the future when pretty much anything might be possible, I could swear that you hacked into my brain and took those thoughts right out. Everything you said, and I do mean everything, runs through my head all the time. Very well said. I dont think I could have said it better myself, but I do think I could have said it just as good. I think we might have lots in common. I look forward to seeing another blog by you.

I have figured that the best strategy is to pack so many labels that the people go crazy.
I used to be the dancer then they had to change it to the movie maker then the Star Wars fanatic...People always assume you can't hold multiple labels. Somehow being the movie fan annihilates the dancer until they find out that I still dance...and somehow it's impossible to believe...I can hear the wheels going inside their mind ready to explode...

I've memorized the SW movies and say the lines when I watch it, and my friends are family look at like I'm crazy. just memorized the every movie and can "play" it in my head...
And almost every time I go to the book store I buy 1 or more SW book, so my WHOLE book self is filled with SW (for more on that, see my blog -Books!Books!and more Books!)......so maybe I am crazy.......
Thank you for shedding some light on the situation!

Anyway, this comment is a bit too late since you posted this blog, but I don't have a lot a time in my life, and I can only read a few blogs every now and then. Keep up the good work.
