Vader's Chest Panel Changes
Does anyone know if there is an in-universe explanation as to why Vader's chest plate goes from colored buttons in A New Hope, to blinking lights in ESB and ROTJ? I have seen the props at C4 that showed how his chest box and belt boxes changed through the different movies, but I'm curious as to whether there's ever been an IN MOVIE explanation for the changes.....I can't find one anywhere.

There isn't an IN MOVIE explanation. They didn't address it in the movies.

As for the extended universe, I don't recall one, but that doesn't mean there isn't one.

I wouldn't be surprised if either Anakin made the change himself, or after a battle, new equipment was used. Based on some of the EU material, it appears that Vader occassionally got banged up pretty good.

I would say it was a matter of technology getting better and, of course, Vader would have the best health care coverage in the galaxy (next to Palpatine).

There's no IN MOVIE explanation, but it would make sense that he'd have upgrades... I just think back at the PC I owned 20 years ago and look at the one I have now.... makes sense!

These explanations make sense...but in ROTS, if I remember correctly, the lights are flashing on his chest box when he "comes alive"......

its simple. Budget. More money to make better props after the 1st movie, plain and simple I doubt there is a EU or any reason explained.

Lucas has shown that when he has more money and time he will improve things with no regard for continuity

Oh, well, if you remember the lights flashing when he comes alive in ROTS that makes perfect sense. I would say it's like when you turn a computer on and the different lights flash until the system they represent is completely on. I think that's all that was. Different bodily functions were being taken care of: lungs, heart, etc.

Exactly. Over the years he needed upgrades. Occasionally it woud be due to battle. But definitely I would go with upgrades. Maybe he tried the colored buttons at some point and decided he didn't like them too well-- probably didn't operate the way he wanted them to, so he had the other box installed. Makes sense to me.

Nice catch, BTW

Thanks vadersgirl33. :) Thanks everyone else too, though I wasn't looking for a real world explanation,
I realize that a higher budget means better effects. Just wondering if there was an in-story
explanation.
