Grievous, The Force and Lightsabers
Okay something struck me today when I was reading someone else's blog.
So General Grievous was taught lightsaber techniques by Dooku, we all
know that (and how come everyone calls him Dooku and never Tyranus?)
We see that while he can swing the lightsabers pretty well, he's no match
for Obi-Wan in ROTS. Obi makes him look kind of silly actually, slicing off
his hands with ease. So why was he able to kill so many other Jedi? Even
if he was great with a lightsaber, shouldn't someone who has the Force as
his ally be able to ALWAYS best a "regular joe"? I don't think the Clone Wars
cartoons make much sense in light of how easily Obi Wan was able to
defeat Grievous in the movie. In the cartoons, Grievous is seen easily
dispatching numerous Jedi. Now I know that Obi is the hero and he can't
lose, but still, it just seems like any Jedi worth his salt should have been
more than a match for a cyborg who knows how to use a lightsaber. Thoughts?
Anyone? :)

Great question, I've wondered about this same thing since I first saw the movie and clone wars cartoons. When you stop and think of it Jedi/sith can block laser bolts shot at them which is much faster then Grievous can move and why the other Jedi's that Grievous killed didn't just force pull the lightsabers out of his hands or force push him all over the place, I'll never get it either.

As shown in the Clone Wars animated show inbetween episode 2 and 3, Count Dooku (Tyranus) taught Grievous about the lightsaber. He strait out told Grievous that he was no match for a force wielder unless he has fear on his side. Grievous was intimidating on purpose. The other Jedi didn't stand a chance simply because they didn't believe they had a chance. It took a Jedi with a bunch of resolve to take out Grievous, luckily Obi was the perfect Jedi.

I think one of the things Greivous had going for him was his unorthodox style. It seemed the Jedi battling him relied more on their sabers and less on their force powers. Greivous wasn't always easy to manipulate through the force either.

What Obi-wan did that counteracted Greivous was to employ a somewhat unorthodox style himself. This is mentioned some in the novelization. Obi-wan varied some of his traditional moves just enough to take out Grevious' hands and whittle down his weapons.

Exactly my point APowerfulJedi...why wouldn't a Jedi Master on the council like
Ki-Adi Mundi be able to full pull the lightsabers out of Grievous's hands, or otherwise
use the Force instead of cowering like they did from him in the Clone Wars series?
I also realize that Grievous had been injured by Mace at the end of the Clone Wars,
so that may have made him a little slower during the fight with Obi Wan...but I still
think the Jedi should have been able to put up more of a fight. Things that make
you go hmmm

The cartoons were way off base anyway... there's one scene where Mace knocks over a whole battalion of battle droids with a Force push... if he could do that, why didn't he do that in the Geonosis Arena? DUH!

I always assumed Obi-Wan could handle him because of the Force, and his exceptional strength in the Force....

I do remember in the novelization where it says something about the speed of Grevious' arms rotating merely made it difficult, but not impossible.... :)
