How Does a Jedi Hide?
Here's a question for all your EU readers out there. I've dabbled in it, but I don't know all
the stories that are out there. Has there ever been any explanation as to
why Obi-Wan and Yoda were able to hide from Vader and Palpatine for all
those years? I mean, Vader goes out hunting Jedi all over the galaxy, how
does Obi-Wan stay hidden, on Anakin's homeworld, for 20 years without
Vader detecting his presence, or Luke's for that matter? Same with Yoda,
why didn' t Dagobah register on Vader's radar as a planet that a Jedi could
hide on?

Along those lines, what about Yoda's line in ESB about the cave, that it was
strong with the Dark Side? Was this something Yoda created as part of
Luke's training, or did the Dark Side already have a strong presence on
the planet? If so, where or who did that presence come from?

I'd love to see a story written where a young Luke visits Dagobah with Obi-Wan, for
some reason. I mean, Luke says "there's something familiar about this
place"....

The cave in ESB was explained by Tiomthy Zahn in the Heir to the Empire series and the Thrawn Duology as the home of a "dark jedi" that Yoda battled and killed. Luke thought that maybe the force influence of Yoda was negated by the dark side influence of the cave, like an electron and proton balance each other out.

In Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader, it's explained, or at least hinted at, that Tatooine is a good place for Obi-Wan to hide because Vader will never go back there. It reminds him too much of his past life as Anakin Skywalker. This makes sense in light of the films. Vader doesn't go down to the planet himself to retrieve the all important Death Star plans, but instead sends stormtroopers.

Thanks for the answers, you guys both make sense with what you're saying. Now, anybody got any ideas about the whole "there's something familiar about this place" line???

the next line is "like we're being watched," so it may just be that luke is used to the feeling of being watched. or it could be that luke is remembering the force vibe from the time he spent with yoda on the tantive iv. i don't know that that line has ever explicitly been explained anywhere.

i agree with rickgelz. there were too many negative emotions associated with the planet for dv to ever want to go back. a couple times i have wondered why he never destroyed/razed tatooine either, but then i realized that he would never destroy the final resting place of his mother.

I'm pretty sure mirax is right--now official explanation on this one's been provided yet.

As for your other questions, I've mostly heard all the answers provided, though I also once heard that Yoda's able to hide on Dagobah simply due to the massive amount of life there that cloaks his presence.
