 | The sensitive side of the Force |
Ok, so I can readily admit that I'm a sensitive guy. I think I always have been my whole life, and I most likely always will be no matter what the situation is. Now I also think logically and do what has to be done when issues present themselves, but I always also seem to be governed by a side of me that feels emotionally affected by some situations. I'm not sure why, but it is something I have just come to accept ... that some things have a big impact on my life that I can think and stew about for days. I don't always like to think about issues so much but it happens and eventually runs its course.
And the sensitive guy in me is always concerned about the people I care about and ensuring that they are looked after and knowing that I care about them. I'm not looking for affirmation, just that they know I care and am thinking the best for them.
Now I wouldn't go so far as to do what Anakin did with his life, but I can certainly see his sensitive side in his actions. He grew up as a sensitive child. He was very aware of his and his mother's slave status on Tatooine and wanted much more for the both of them. He took offense to being considered anything else other than himself which he made clear to our group of travellers as they entered Watto's shop. He clearly stated that he was a person and his name was Anakin ... he was sensitive to the thought of being a slave the rest of his life. Which led him to being overcome with emotion when he realized he was freed from that life, but his mother was not. His sensitivity to her not being freed would govern many of his actions and emotions for the rest of his life.
And he of course showed his sensitive side with Padme throughout the movies. First, she was a replacement mother figure for him after he left Tatooine, then became a love interest that would dominate his feelings and decisions to the point of sacrificing everything he had come to know and abide by. His sensitivity did indeed show itself with her when they were in private. He loved her more than anything else including staying in the Jedi Order (otherwise he would not have risked so much with her). He cared for her and only wanted the best for her to the point that he was willing to cross over to unknown territory to save her ... his sensitive side told him this was ok. It allowed him to listen to Palpatine and trust that this was the only way to get what the sensitive side wanted.
And though that didn't work out for him, he as Vader still maintained his sensitive side (remember he was more forgiving than the Emperor!). When Luke stepped into his life, the sensitive side that still existed flickered to life again. Luke drew out of him the emotions that he once held as a sensitive being by showing him the love and forgiveness his sensitive side was always looking for. As Anakin, he didn't feel the Jedi Order would show him the love and forgiveness he wanted for living his life the way he wanted to ... with a person who would be there just for him. They would throw him out of the Order for his transgressions and his dream of being a Jedi would be smashed. All because of his sensitive side. So he did what he felt he had to do to bring that love to himself. And it's interesting that it took many more years to get that love back and in the form of a different person. His son.
So I can relate to Anakin in certain ways. I feel we're both sensitive beings who fully take to heart the situations we find ourselves in. Whether it's problems at work or the Jedi Council, whether it's showing our sensitive side to the ones we love, whether it's being saved from what we've become and ending a tyrannical reign over the galaxy (ok, maybe he's got one up on me there!), I find a similarity in sensitivity.
So like Anakin / Vader, no matter how tough or hard or complete we appear on the outside, there is always a sensitive being underneath who is looking for something better, some fulfillment, some love. And sensitivity.

There are many ways to define and identify the nature of what humanity strives for. The works of Dickens, for instance, juxtapose great need with overflowing wealth and far reaching power. Great Expectations concludes with an excellent answer to this existential dilemma: I took her hand in mine, and we went out of the ruined place; and [in]the broad expanse of tranquil light [...], I saw no shadow of another parting from her.
Regardless of what can be materially collected, what Dickensī Pip craves is this essential connection to people. All the wealth in the world could never replace his care for his loved ones, which the conclusion above celebrates elegantly.

This is the highest achievement we can ever attain. And Ani, from being a slave to becoming a knight, is equally driven by compassion for the people he knows and loves.
I must say, Hiram, what an excellent observation again. The layers of existence are manifold indeed, but it is the inside that gives our lives the true light we are to follow.
Great blog entry

Great entry, DH. Some dear friends and I were JUST having a conversation about Anakin/DV and how we relate to him. Personally, I don't know how someone can NOT relate to that which is dark, perhaps also sensitive, inside all of us.
What some fans interpret as Anakin's selfishness or lust for pwer, you (and I!) see as sensitivity, as that which allowed Anakin to eventually be redeemed, even though it took him down a very Dark path first.
We all have a Dark side. We all have sensitivities.
Excellent thoughts!

A great quote, Mr Wentorth ... and one that is so true to the human condition. We all seem to be looking for the connection to others that can fulfill our senses and sensitivity. Thanks for the comments!

Indeed, Ami. Anakin acted upon emotion and sensitivity which was both his undoing and his saving. Thanks for the nice comments!

still dont believe darth vader gone down the dark path, but darth vaders feelings toward his own love ones from slave to "monster" still are the same, yet he had padme for the longest, he had his son for a few minutes and yet he loved him with all his heart

I think GL took pains to show Ani's sensitive side right from the beginning, in TPM, when he asked Shmi if he could help his new friends. He was practically in tears as he said "...the biggest problem in this universe is that no one helps each other". And in ROTS, after he kills the Seperatists on Mustafar, we see more tears. So tragic!
Vader still maintained his sensitive side
Not sure about that...I still have trouble reconciling his torture of Leia in ANH and Han in TESB. He probably had to torture them, just to save face and show that he was doing his "job", but still, I mean, it's torture.
So he did what he felt he had to do to bring that love to himself.
Well said!

Indeed, fan5 ... he wanted us to sympathize with Anakin's tragedy. And a great job he did in telling the story!

I've often found myself thinking about Anakin's decision to turn to the dark side...all for Padme. Would I do the same? If I loved someone that much, how could I not do anything to save him? I just love thinking about Anakin as well, his sensitivity, love for people, etc. I get frustrated with people who don't understand his transition to the dark side because even though I can't relate to some points like Anakin's excessive love for power, some are situations that I, too, would find myself turning to the dark side too. I love reading your blogs, Hiram. Keep it up!

Thanks acegrl! I agree ... not everybody sees Anakin's turn as something his sensitive side drove. He was a sensitive, caring person ... and that's what drove him into the embrace of the dark side.
thanks for the comments and glad you like my blogs!

I've often found myself thinking about Anakin's decision to turn to the dark side...all for Padme.
Ace, if you read the novel, the seduction of Anakin is far more involved than the movie. Palpatne convinced him that the list of 2,000 - a deleted scene from the movie - is a list of traitors, including Padme!
Palpatine puts this betrayel in the form of politics, which Anakin is hopelessly niave and can ony accept. His anger at Padme is not a personal betrayel but a political one. She brought OB1 & tried to stop him from "bringing peace to his new empire."

how could I not do anything to save [the one I love.
Ace, one does it by sticking to 1st principles, e.g.,: (1). Anakin could not humble himself to the will of the Force. (2), The means (murder) do not justify the ends (no threat from Dooku, Padme, OB1). (3). Obey & respect the wisdom of superiors like Grand Master Windu & stay out of the affair of arresting Palpatine.
