As I sit and reflect on my own life, I often wonder what I would like to be known for. What would I want people to remember about me when it's my time to "become one with the Force"? What makes me proud to leave behind as a memory? Now I don't intend to be sombre with this entry, I just want to point out, with the help of our saga in the GFFA, that our words and actions of the present can determine our legacy in the minds of those we leave behind.
In my life I try to be as kind and polite and understanding as possible. Perhaps to a fault. Sometimes certain situations call for tough action which has to be mustered, but isn't impossible. But on the whole I tend to lead my life being respectful of the people and environment around me ... to be otherwise would go against the moral fibre I feel it takes to be a decent person on this planet. So I'd like to be remembered for the kind acts and words I employ each day, and the notion that one person can make another person feel respected and good about themselves.
And what lessons can we take away from the characters in our favourite saga? What have some of them left behind as their legacy?
Of course, first to mind is Anakin. We could look at him as leaving behind a legacy of evil and hatred as Darth Vader ... causing death and destruction at the flick of a finger ... in the eyes of those he oppressed.
But what of the others who knew him? His mother remembered him to be a kindly and generous young boy who only looked out for the good in others and wanted to help them. She didn't raise him with the intention to become a powerful lord, capable of hate and destruction, knowing only his fear as his guide. She knew the Anakin who had dreams of being a good Jedi, helping others with confidence and good intentions.
And what he left behind with her was that emotion, as well as the physical manifestation of that emotion in C3P0. Threepio was the culmination of Anakin's imagination and innocence ... he represented the desire Anakin held in creating a good and decent life. Threepio didn't have an evil servo-motor in him and that was the result of Anakin's good-natured ability ... a notion he left behind on Tatooine with his mother as he set off for his new home in the Jedi Temple. Where he would develop a new outlook on life.
And as his life progressed he encountered many people who would remember him in a certain light. Obi-Wan and Yoda certainly had their minds made up as to how Anakin's legacy finally came to be. What Anakin left behind on Mustafar was worlds apart from what he left behind with his mother on Tatooine. By then he was Darth Vader but in my mind he somehow still had Anakin connected to his soul when he fought Obi-Wan. He truly didn't
want to fight his former master but had no other choice at that point in time. And when he was struck down, he wasn't leaving a notion of goodwill and innocence behind as he did with Threepio years before ... he was leaving his whole former self. The pieces of his body that were severed by Obi-Wan's lightsabre became the last remnants of his old life that were left behind on Mustafar. And the new life he would carry on was all that was left in that tortured and burned body and soul.
But he regained that life back years later through someone who saw the good and innocent Anakin that had still existed (and ironically enough, still existed in C3P0 to that very day!).
And Obi-Wan certainly left behind his legacy in the form of being a true and steadfast Jedi who only believed in making things right for the galaxy. He lived his life as a Jedi Knight and Master to the fullest of his ability, and lived his life on Tatooine to ensure that right would eventually overcome wrong. He took the last bit of Anakin, his lightsabre, and passed it on to Luke to take up the mantle as the saviour of the galaxy and the future of the Jedi. Obi-Wan left behind very little in terms of physical attributes, save for his hut on Tatooine and any goodies discovered within, but his spirit and fortitude would live on with Luke for many years to come, guiding him and making him stronger. And this is what truly helped Luke in overcoming the odds and saving the galaxy, and his father's soul. And in my mind, this stands as a tribute to the amazing legacy that Obi-Wan's life came to be. Both Luke and Anakin would not have been saved if not for Obi-Wan's bravery as a Jedi.
So, again, I look at my own life and what I wish to leave as my "legacy". Certainly it won't be as colourful or "action-packed" as the saga in the GFFA, but I wish it to be as amazing and meaningful as it can be.
