A Journey into The Force

Just a moment
My wife and I were at a nature park today which includes a series of hikes and trails, some small lakes, lots of wildlife as well as the manufactured buildings of an interpretive centre, a museum of sorts and the token restaurant and gift shop. It was really a beautiful setting here in our city ... a natural getaway within the confines of our urban life. We spent hours hiking and talking and absorbing all that this little cut-out of Mother Nature had to offer. It really was a lot of fun and a great reminder of what our planet really is all about.

And my favourite part was when we finished our hiking and took a break outside the interpretive centre which is situated between a couple of small lakes. As we walked out on the patio and strode by the picnic tables set up, we spotted a couple of wooden lounge-type chairs side-by-side and situated right at the top of an embankment that led down to the lake. They were placed just within a little spot of clearing between a row of hedges and facing the lake and the trees and plains beyond. And with absolutely no one around, we took those seats to relax and have a drink of water and a spot of snack. We chatted for a few minutes about what we saw on our hike and how beautiful the setting is. Then we just sat and looked out on the lake to relish in the luck we had in getting to this spot.

And as I looked out, the wind was whipping up to cool us off, the birds were chatting to themselves high above us, the clouds were rolling by as puffs of quiet serenity and the sun beams were dancing on the waves of the water in stunning, glittering, mesmerizing fashion. And I imagined that this is very much like the power of the Force. The Force, as old Ben described it, is an energy field that binds us and penetrates us ... it is all around us. How can all this beauty and life of the setting that I am beholding now not be like the Force? I feel the energy of all this nature binding me and flowing through my very body and soul ... like the wind that is blowing hard to move the waves and bring us refreshment, I feel its power in its movement. The birds are calling overhead in a language that only they understand, giving energy unto themselves in their natural glory. The clouds are gathering energy unto themselves in the form of moisture that will rain down upon us giving us life and nourishment. The sun, gleaming so beautifully on the water, is giving us the very energy that we need to live ... to feed off of its giving power and sustain our very beings, as well as provide the beauty I see on the water.

And I realize that all this has come together for us ... both human and nature. It allows us to live as one planet and gives us the state of being. And it's allowing me to live in the moment and absorb all that it has to offer ... to renew and to refresh.

And as I further think of Star Wars, I think of the moment that also served to renew and refresh. That of Luke giving his self over to the Force to defend his environment. He threw down his weapon in the heat of battle in defense of what he knew to be right ... he was living in the moment when he saw clearly what needed to be done. He was washed over by the Force to do what was right and in turn the Force granted him a renewed life ... one in which his father was redeemed. He accepted what the situation was and did what he had to do. Years before, Anakin couldn't live in the moment to do what was right ... he was too plagued by what he thought he saw in the future and what pained him about his past. If he could have had moments like I had today, and let the Force flow through him and enjoy the spot he was in, the galaxy may have turned out differently. Instead, he closed himself off to all the things around him that made up the whole of his existence ... such as the wind caressing his face, the music of the birds, the silent peace of the clouds and the beauty of the sun-kissed water.

Now, they don't happen everyday, but when these moments strike they certainly help to put me at ease. When I can sense the scope of the beauty of our world, albeit in just a small little piece of nature preserve, I can very much appreciate all that this life has to offer. It also helps me to understand Ben Kenobi's interpretation of the Force as he explained it to Luke and how it guides a Jedi in their thinking. To feel that much energy all around is very eye-opening, very settling and very humbling.

And I look forward to the next moment.

Another stunningly-written piece, dude.

And very interesting that your mind took you to Luke's final confrontation... I would have so easily been taken to the vast wilderness of Dagobah or the sparce desert of Tatooine. But hey, energy is energy, you can feel it anywhere, if you try hard enough!

What she said. :D

Nature can really be healing, and it gives you a perspective of being a part of the cycle of life, as I imagine the Force does.

If he could have had moments like I had today, and let the Force flow through him and enjoy the spot he was in, the galaxy may have turned out differently
I agree. If he and Padme could have raised their child(ren) on Naboo, maybe Anakin would have found peace in the natural beauty of that planet and appreciated his connection with the Force. Of course there's the little problem of him possibly having to leave the Jedi order, but that's another story.

To all those who think SW is just for kids, I think you've shown here why they've missed the boat entirely. Reading your description I couldn't help but think of Yoda's description of how the Force is created, sustained by life and surrounds us. (It's also why I think the Sith use of the Force to destroy life had thrown the Force itself into unbalance).

Thanks Stooge. I just thought of a scene with one of those moments where all is clear, and that's what my mind came up with!

That was beautiful! You filled my mind with some fantastic visuals, DH. Thanks!
No, thank you, Hansgirl! It was really a beautiful scene.

Indeed it would be easy to get lost in the beauty of Naboo. Thanks for the comments!

Yes, I thought I could sense you there, my friend! Thanks for the comments, nobby.

Yoda's description of how the Force is created, sustained by life and surrounds us
Definitely. Life depends on the Force, and the Force depends on life ... almost a symbiotic relationship. Especially if you buy into Qui-Gon's midichlorian theory! But really, I like Obi-Wan's and Yoda's talk about the Force best, and it relates here on Earth better.

Another beautifully crafted entry, DH! Geesh, if you have never been Featured Blog Of The Day before, you should be! Your entries are some of the best on the site, and I am amazed at your ability to tie the "everyday" into SW and compare it to real life. I was a little misty-eyed reading this....

Just lovely, and I so share your sentiments.... and as others have said, I felt as though I was right there with you. I really need to spend a day out in the woods or something sometime soon!

:D

How true. "Humbling" is such a good word and I often feel that people dont realize how humbling being in nature like that can be.

I totally agree with Mr. Pitt on this one!

They are wonderful, aren't they? They just seem to lift your spirit so much.

Exactly. It can be so wonderful just to let all of the energy around you carry your inner thoughts as well as your visual eye.

I totally agree with Mr. Pitt on this one!

Beautiful, DH. As always. I fully agree with those who feel you should be Featured Blogger.

So weird, but I had a very similar experience late Saturday night. I was actually driving home from mo2yp's house, a route that takes me through a beautiful state park that is lush and green during the day and startlingly beautiful at night. There were few cars on the road as I drove through the lake-filled landscape. The moonlit sky was clear while a dense fog rolled in and out of my path...

Looking out over the lake with the moonlight reflected on it, I had a thrill go through me, a wave of excitement that can only come from something as all-encompassing as the beauty of nature around us. I, too, thought of Star Wars...thought of the Force...thought of feeling connected to everyone and everything around me.

I also thought about how lucky I am to have these kinds of experiences in my life, and I said a little prayer to The Maker, thanking Him for amazing moments that take my breath away and the friends who make them happen.

It can really be overwhelming at times. But a good overwhelming. And to connect to SW is something we all can share.

thanking Him for amazing moments
Amen to that. Thanks for the comments, my friend!

What you describe sounds absolutely lovely! My girlfriend and I went to Canada in November last year to Vancouver for our holiday. I remember being at the top of Grouse mountain with the most spectacular, clear view. It was so calm and peaceful up there but also very humbling, surrounded by the vastness of nature. It remains one the fondest memories of my life.

I think that you have hit the nail on the head with your observations. If the force is not that feeling of peace you get when listening to the rustle of leaves, the music of birds and lapping of waves upon the shore, then what is it?

Thanks, JSM! My wife and I have been to Banff and climbed a mountain there. It was priceless and indeed a beautiful moment I'll never forget. As you say, what is the Force if it's not in the beauty you behold?

Well, since probably no one else is going to see this comment but you, I'll just throw it out there and not worry about getting chewed out for it:

What a wonderful world God has given us to enjoy! :D

Wonderful comparison, DH! It's amazing how the beauty of nature can refresh us! I definitely understand what you were saying about how it feels like the Force! :)

Oh yes, and you have just provided the inspiration I've needed to start blogging again! Thanks! :D
