Well, I just finished reading Issue #5 of
The Clone Wars monthly comic series. Originally, I think it was planned for a 6-issue miniseries, but now it will evidently have more story arcs. I have mixed feelings on the series as a whole. The quote from Dark Horse was that each issue would have a backup story in addition to the main storyline, but this doesn't seem to be the case. I was actually hoping for each issue to be a one-shot story that also fit together with the others, like what they did with some issues of
Empire and
Republic. The storyline itself isn't especially notable, though it is nice that they're bringing Anakin's backstory back into the picture.
Good
I guess the best you can say about it is that doesn't have many continuity errors or out-of-character moments. Definitely not up to the par of
Republic, but worth a read. It's also interesting to see the Togruta planet and males of the species for the first time.
Bad
There are too many unnecessary nods and references to the original trilogy. Some kind of sense of coherence with any of the movies would be more welcome. (spoiler alert) There is also a somewhat disturbing scene in which an eyepatch-wearing Anakin must whip a bound and submissive Obi-Wan. That went quite a ways towards retroactively ruining my childhood. (end spoilers)
Other
Personally, I think it would be incredible if they made a series of comics that ties into the show but doesn't have art based on the CGI style--that is, it would have the same characters etc. and be set during the same time, but have art more like the other monthly series they have going on now--or even artwork like
Clone Wars Adventures (pictured). It almost feels like EU buffs have nowhere to turn for CW-era materials that isn't directly related to the new show, and it would serve as a nice reminder that the show isn't the only interpretation of the Clone Wars.
