In my guild, Light of Ossus', I often speak with my guildmates using the third-party application known as 'Ventrilo', which is similar to 'Teamspeak'.
One of my most active guildmates is very gracious and friendly southerner who also happens to be an evangelical Christian. He also happens to play a level 90 Jedi.
Since he is a bible-based Christian, also known as a 'fundamentalist' (a term he dislikes as does another bible-based Christian friend of mine who loves sci-fi), it is surprising and comforting that he is open-minded enough to appreciate the mythic storytelling value and qualities of Star Wars despite the fact that it is not strictly a 'Christian' venue of entertainment nor teaching. It is quite secular, and therefore accessible to everyone with some reasonable intellectual autonomy, including people who lean more conservatively in their religious beliefs but who do not eschew things simply for being secular.
I am glad for people like this, because hopefully they will be able to dissuade some in their congregations who are part of a more negative movement that is beginning to cloud America in darkness: Christian Dominionism.
These people are the kind of fundamentalists that don't want non-evangelicals to hold citizenship, important jobs nor really any sort of rights, and would reduce women essentially to handmaidens. They are essentially the same people as we're supposedly fighting in Afghanistan.
What would happen to Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings and other stories and hobbies if these people gain much more power than they already have?
I want you to think about that, my padawans, and start paying attention to what is going on in our society.
If anyone is curious, I'm a progressive Roman Catholic, and specifically a 'liberation theologist'. I see Jesus as a 'divine activist' Who demands that people work for social justice. I'm also an anarchist. Most anarchists are athiestic, but I'm a large exception.
Enough of that now. Now, THINK!
