Aubresh alphabets, car accidents and stolen RPG books
Looking at another user's blog here, I saw information on Aubresh alphabet fonts, and I followed the provided link from one of the comments. There, I saw that the person who owned the site had created much of the art for West End Game's 1st edition of the Star Wars roleplaying game back in the late 1980's.

I had that edition. I ran the second edition of West End at a couple of conventions at my college to great acclaim, but the 1st edition holds a certain dubious place in my history:

In November 1989, I rolled my first car in a nasty accident. I was on my way to run a game of Star Wars RPG 1st Edition by West End. My whole gaming kit, including all the books current at that time, was stolen by the people towing the remains of my car. Argh.

But how did I roll my first car? I was driving a gun-metal gray Ford Escort GL, at 92 mph, on a wet rainy road in backwoods Bucks County, PA. near midnight. I was banging my head to a song, 'Manitou', by Venom. (I won't mention the name of the album here because Venom was the original 'Black Metal' band and the name of their favorite spiritual entity will probably raise some hackles here. Suffice it to say they took one of heavy metal's most notorious themes waaaaay too far.)

Well, I hit a deadman's curve, which I knew well but I was banging my head to something really loud, and I paid the price for my youthful stupidity when I passed someone much more sensible. With my car on its side, the guy helped me get out the side door which was now skyward, took off before the cops showed up since I hadn't sideswiped him, and the rest is history.

The offending tower was based in Silverdale, PA. I will never have my car towed by anyone from Silverdale, PA., although I expect someone's grandchildren now have Star Wars books that are older than their parents.

It's interesting how completely unrelated topics can take you places unexpected...
