Anakin and Padme: If forbidden love stayed forbidden
While sitting at my desk in my bedroom, I started to think, "Well, what if Anakin never married Padme?", that thought struck me, and so I started to think what would have happened. Would Anakin have fallen to the dark side? Would the Republic have turned into the Empire?

Anakin had always loved Padme ever since they first met in Watto's junk shop. He knew he would marry her (as the novel says) and so he did. But what if he didn't? They would not have that secret to hide. And maybe, Anakin wouldn't have turned to the dark side for the same reasons. Let's recap.

Anakin fell to the dark side to try and save Padme from dying. He failed. In fact, he actually caused her to die, from a certain point of view. She "lost the will to live" in seeing Anakin do the things he did. She lost the man she loved.

Now, what if they didn't get married, or never loved each other? If they never loved each other, Anakin would never have turned to the dark side for those reasons. If they never got married, Padme would continue to do her duty as senator and Anakin would continue being a Jedi. They did that even though they got married. So nothing would change that much if they didn't get married. But, things would be alot different if they didn't love each other.

(1) Episode II and III would be alot different.

(2) Luke and Leia would never have been born.

(3) C-3PO would be only in the care of Anakin.

(4) R2-D2 would only be in the care of Padme.

What do you guys think would happen if they never got married or never loved each other?

No Luke and Leia=Complete Victory for the Empire since they led the Rebellion and the rise of the Jedi, respectively.

It reminds me of a comment that one of my youngest sister's friends made shortly after Episode I came out. If Padme marries Anakin, it will completely ruin Star Wars for me.

All I could do was laugh about that one.

Well that wasn't the only reason. I think he still probly would have gone to the dark side anyway - it just would have taken a bit longer.

If he and Padme didn't love eachother, then Anakin would have one less thing to be mad at the Jedi over, so he might be slightly less rebellious. Maybe.

Nice thoughts! Those "what if's" really keep one's mind working! :D

True, the entire saga would have changed.

I think Anakin would have fallen to the Dark Side much faster if not for Padme.

However, Padme would have lived and might been a strong "force" in the Rebel Alliance (like her offspring eventually were).

Still, the thought of no Princess Leia and no Luke Skywalker is a staggering one. Without Leia, Alderaan, a strong planet for justice and peace, may never have gotten involved in the war effort. Likewise, if Luke was not part of the mix then Obi-Wan might have rushed to face Vader and been "destroyed" for nothing. Han and Chewbacca would have probably continued on as merely a ship-for-hire service at best and pirates at worst.

"Difficult to see, the alternate future is."

It's hard for me to put my mind in that line of thought, seeing how central to everything they are.

I agree ... Anakin would have fallen to the darkside eventually. Padme may have quickened his descent, or slowed it down, that could be up for debate (or another blog!).
We definitely would have had a different route to the story if they didn't fall in love, but his destiny would still be intact.

Let's sift through some facts. If Anakin had never loved or married Padme:

Anakin would have remained a full-fledged jedi and would have had his own padawan

Darth Sidious would never have revealed himself as a sith lord to Anakin

Padme would have remained on the senate and watched in horror as it crumbled around her

The Empire would never have risen because Palpatine would have no reason to reorganize the Republic

We would have a worse prequal trilogy than the one we have now

So you see my point?

I think destiny is a word used by people who believe they know what the future will bring. I doubt that any of us really know whether Anakin would have turned to the Dark Side if he had not fallen in love with Padme. To believe that we have a definite answer to that question smacks of a little arrogance to me.

We would have a worse prequal trilogy than the one we have now . . .

Couldn't you have said a "different" prequel trilogy without indulging in the usual "PT" bashing?

How can Vader not sense Leia is his daughter.

Yes Anakin would probably never have turned to the dark side if Anakin and Padme never fell in love, however, The Emperor probably would have never been overthrown. Think about it, if Anakin and Padme never fell in love then they would not have had children and Darth Vader (or anyone) would never have overthrown The Emperor to save his son.

So because Anakin and Padme fell in love, the galaxy was a safer place.
