Frank Oz Loves Jar Jar Binks!!
That's right, baby!! Listeners of the Audiocast (Hyperspace members can click here for the interview) with Rob Coleman and Frank Oz, were treated to this gushing response to the Exiled Gungan:

Frank Oz: "...Just about Jar Jar; I remember flying over London and reading the script. And after I read the script....I said to George, oh I love Jar Jar, he's going to be a breakout character. I know he is. I have never understood to this day...I *LOVE* Jar Jar! And this whole [flustered]...I don't understand the nonsense, he was TERRIFIC! I mean, as an adult, I love this guy, I think he's hysterical, he just cracked me up!"

From a man who has created some of the funniest characters in film and television, that's very high praise. And it just goes to show you that The Phantom Menace is for kids of all ages, and not for the damned cynical fanboys that the Internet generation has produced.

I also loved Rick's comment, regarding whether Jar Jar was "given a smaller role" because of the negative reaction to him:

"We probably had him more in Episode II BECAUSE of the reaction, than we would have had if there had NOT been a bad reaction to him." That is awesome...The chutzpah! I loved to see Jar Jar in Episode III as well, especially giving him a line - "Oops! 'Scuze me."

It's funny. As soon as I heard Frank singing the praises of Jar Jar, I thought to myself, "I bet Wiggum posts this in his blog...." ;)

I loved Rick's jibe about increasing Binks's role just to annoy all the Jar Jar haters. Wonder if he was serious? :^O

Oh I'm sure he was...That had me rolling too, because, it's as if Rick and I were thinking the same thing. I was HOPING after TPM that they would not get rid of Jar Jar, and all my dreams came true for Episode III; I hoped they would find a way to show Jar Jar near the end, surviving the Prequels without a scratch. And so they did, at the funeral.

I always thought Jar Jar was handed an unfair lump of coal. There really was no reason to dislike him, especially with such vile hatred some of the fans felt towards him. I also think Jar Jar was sort of symbolic for all that was still inncoent and pure in the galaxy; he never showed any ill will towards anybody, he wasn't greedy, he was just "out for the early morning munching" and got caught up in the events that follwed.

Thanks for posting this! I had no idea...I guess I need to start listening to the audiocasts more frequently now.

It's pretty cool when Frank Oz agrees with us about Jar Jar. Who have the mopey black t-shirt crowd got?

I think I know whose opinion -and talents - I respect more. Hmmm...Oz...."damned cynical fanboys" :D

No contest!

Yeah, I would have thought the opposite. Interesting.

I like Jar Jar too, and I wasn't exposed to him till I was 14. 1st impression: "hehe, funny.. but annoying." I grew to like him better, and now I have a cup with him on it.

Wait a sec, what does this have to do with anything!

Well I agree, Jar Jar is for kids of all ages. (PS... I think one reason the kids (and big kids) like Jar Jar is because he looks like a dinosaur)

Another name for that group is "Emo.":p

And I think Rick is telling the truth. When asked about the live-action TV show he said "It is what fans always wanted. I know they didn't really get what they expected from the prequels."

Plus, people are known to say things that contain a high amount of truth to them, yet are offensive, when intoxicated.:p ;)

"It is what fans always wanted. I know they didn't really get what they expected from the prequels."

Ahh, that's deeply disappointing. Not that I've invested any high expectations in the TV series. Still, I'd rather watch something that followed someone's vision, rather than a show that caters to everyone's vision.

It's first of all impossible and second of all a dependable recipe for utter crap. This is bad news.
