The Clone wars should have ended before they began. If anyone remembers Shatterpoint, Deepa Bilaba told this to Mace Windu:
1: The Jedi should've bombed the Arena and destroyed everything and everybody in it. That includes Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Padmè. The Jedi should've realized that 2 Jedi and a senator are not worth the lives lost in a galaxy-wide war. They are a small price to pay for an end of a war before it began. But instead the Jedi fought and died.
2: The duel between Yôda and Dooku was a second chance. By now it was too late to save the Jedi. Obi-Wan had said that they could end the war by killing Dooku. Obi -Wan's attempt failed and Yôda walked in. They duel until the Count stops it by collapsing a beam on top of Anakin and Obi-Wan. So Yôda stopped and Force-shoved it aside. Shouldn't he have killed Dooku while he had the chance? Didn't he learn from Mace's mistake and pay small price for a greater cause?
On the other hand, if you'd be in a fight with a choice to save those next to you or the galaxy, in the spur of the moment you would have done everything in your power to stop the falling beam.
But this is battle-hardened Mace and wise Yôda. They should not have let the lives of 3 condemn the galaxy to war.
