Borrow a Trekkie
A little while ago, the Norwegian Green cross (a subsidiary of the red one), created a human library. The idea behind this is that it will be possible to borrow a human being for a few hours.
Not just any other human, but one that a lot of people are prejudiced against. Blind, in a wheelchair, gay/lesbian/transgender, HIV-positive, immigrant, bulimic, old, soccer-fan, jew, preast, and so on. I think they've got a politician as well.

The reason of doing this is that people, schools, organisations etc. should be able to redeem their prejudices by learning more about so-called weird people.

If you could borrow a person for a few hours, and thus learn more of who they are and how their world is built, who would you choose?

I think I would pick a Star Trek fan. I've always wondered what they're on about.

Hey as long as you feed me, entertain me, let me have minimal bathroom breaks and a five-gallon bucket of Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper, and a pantry full of bugles, I'll be that Trekkie!

Oh that and not mind me reciting Klingon battle chants at night or pretending the Living Room is the bridge to the Enterprise...Enterprise-D That is, my favorite of the bunch...;)

Send me a click, meet my demands, and respond when I call you "Number One", and I think I'd really enjoy myself...

lol what an absurd idea! Borrowing people of a specific social group to know about them? why the hell not... At least it would be honest, although awkward, naive and alienating :p I don't think people would naturally reach out for those who are different... So yeah, whatever floats your drakkar!

Sorry I haven't commented myself yet, had a little BDS emergency, and had to go away for a few hours.

Seems like that library wasn't such a bad idea.

Lets all remember, the two, Star Wars and Star Trek, could not exist without each other. Star Wars is still here because there was a large sci-fi fan base that developed in the late 1960s and through the 1970s. A fan base that enjoyed what could be called a real space based show, Star Trek, rather than the monster or earth based shows that came before it.

And Star Trek as is exists today could not exist without Star Wars. The kick from Star Wars jumped Star Trek to the big screen, and the visual effects of Star Wars (and ILM itself) made Star Trek look better than ever.
  ithekro

And while some think the two are competion, they are not, and never really have been. Star Trek films come out in November or December, when they do come out, and Star Wars comes out in May. Not fighting for theater seats, no fighting for tape or DVD sales. They even ended within the same month (the final episode of Enterprise and the final Star Wars Movie were released within a week of each other).

I've been a fan of both for a very long time. in the earlyt 1980s I would switch favorites when a film was released (1982: Star Trek, 1983: Star Wars, 1984: Star Trek). Both mean something to me. I've never understood the fight between fans. Even if fiction, I use them together. Done right, they fit like a glove.

Ah, yes. Well done Mr. Ithekro. I will admit that I became a "Star-Trek fan" near the end of last year, forcing myself to watch an episode of TNG on G4. I became hooked, and now I'm starting my second-favorite season, and regretably the last season, Enterprise

That a tough ride. DS9 was one of those shifting plot line series that still kept to the core over time. Nice war in the later seasons, but still its an acquired taste, even to Trekies (I still use the older term even), I liked it, but I know enough people who didn't care for it...or some that didn't like Voyager, or Enterprise.

But there are some facts: 10 movies, 5 television series and one cartoon series. Just in seasions alone for the 5 series that's 28 years worth of television seasons. It is something like 575 hours of Star Trek. That's a lot of television in 40 years time. So give it a shot, there is bound to be something in all of that for anyone to like even a small piece of Trek.

Star Wars has a wider appeal due to it fantasy nature, realism look (lived in look to the galaxy), and its general fast action storytelling method. Star Trek is more technology and humanity based (cultural and current events stories) which sometimes is suppose to give us a look at ourselves. Its a slower way to tell tales and sometimes they hit a little close to home. Its suppose to reflect human nature, both good and bad, while staying solidly in the science fiction setting rather than fantasy. (Thought admittedly they could use a fresh start with new writters...but then with so many shows, you are bound to repeat yourself from time to time.)

True. I still think Babylon 5 did the whole space station based long term story arc better, but DS9 is still a good show. A rarely missed an episode once I found a regular station to record it off of. Season 3 is where it picks up, though the first two seasons aren't bad.

Babylon 5: from the views persective

1st year: feeling it out and setting things up, generally without the viewer knowing what is being setup and what is a diversion.

2nd year: the pieces and story start to take form and the viewer starts going for a ride.

3rd and 4th years: hold on tight and don't miss a show for you are in for a long and good ride.

5th year: aftermath. starts off not quite as good as before, but ends as good as they started. A result of being cancelled and then being uncancelled...meaning they thought year 4 was going to be it, but were given the 5th year...now they had to do something.

Not that I don't love Star Wars (why else would I be on this board). As ithekro says, they're very different. Star Wars is a hero's journey, Luke setting out to discover who he is and redeem his family name. The plot is not unique, but Lucas's way of telling the story carries the magic. Star Trek is much more character and plot driven. As a result, if a particular Star Trek series fails to develop interesting characters, the series doesn't have much to offer (hence my problem with both Voyager and Enterprise). DA1, give TOS a try- still the best characters of the entire franchise.

Okay, there's only like six comments left, but all the people who have recommanded DS9, I just have one question. I've heard that if someone jumps right in the storylines may be confusing, so should I start with renting the DVD's and start from point one, or just catch it this afternoon on Spike TV?

Have any of you ever actually WATCHED star trek?

And without star trek, there would probably be no star wars, let alone such a large population of sci-fi/fantasy geeks.

star wars is cool and all, but i dont see why people get all hyped up over a couple of movies, whereas star trek is hundreds upon hundreds of episodes and movies to keep your mind satisfied.

so instead of borrowing a trekkie, why not actually try WATCHING the shows?

Yes, I've watched some Star Trek, and it simply didn't do it for me. I simply didn't get as excited by it as I am by SW. Easy as that.

Besides, I started the Star Trek thread only because of the mandatory dislike a SW fan is supposed to have with ST. I honestly don't mind one bit what people watch or don't watch.
