Republic 78
I just received another batch of pencils for Dark Horse's Republic 78, the first in a two-part story titled "Into the Unknown." Just for information, after the comic proposal and script are approved, "pencils" are submitted. These are black and white drawings of the comic panels in their final layout. In the next step, the dialogue balloons (and dialogue) are added... then it goes to color.

First off, the cover for this issue, created by John Gallagher and Chris Chuckry, is awesome. Striking. Dark Horse doesn't have it up on their site yet, but... wow... the art is fabulous and this guy has a lot of pouches!

Back to the pencils -- Doug Wheatly, the artist for the REVENGE OF THE SITH adaptation, is drawing these two issues. I can't say enough good things about Doug's work. He was kind enough to send me an original page from RotS and I'll be framing it for my new office when we move to the Presido this fall. Doug's pencils are a work of art in themselves. Many of the single panels just blow me away. The detail, the shading, the characterizations. I'm awed. The pencils have such depth and emotion, I almost wish DH wouldn't color it.

Oh, and the script for these two issues isn't bad either. That Welles Hartley -- he's quite a storyteller. Look for this one in August -- yeah, I guess this has turned into a plug for the comic, but it's so awesome I don't want you to miss it.

However, a few of Wheatley's drawings can be found at Rebelscum, as part of an interview he give away...

Sue, is there any chance to acquire the original for the Verpine Jedi? I'm a huge Verpine fan, and I've wondered if Wheatley will sell his artwork as other artists do.

Were you talking about the cover for 78 or 79. Because the one for 78 is up on the site, or at least it was, I haven't looked at it in a while.

I'm a big fan of Doug...
I interviewed him here on the site this year about the RotS comic he did and was really impressed with his work!

I can't wait to see more stuff from the guy!

Do you know why "Into the Unknown has been pushed back to issues 79&80. Did Doug fall behind, or was there some other problem?

No problems -- yep, Doug fell behind. The art I've received from him is fantastic... so worth the wait.

The art for Republic 79 and 80 is very cool. There is a final cover for 80 -- don't know why Dark Horse hasn't posted it yet.

My mistake. I meant about Republic's 78 and 80 art :D. We know already that art of 80 is great. What about 78 ? This comic is drawing Luke Ross. Did he fall behind ? I'm asking becasue this issue is still delaying
