Anakin's Descent to the Dark Side
There's a part in Episode II that has always sparked my curiosity. It begins when Anakin finds his mother and after she dies in his arms, is consumed by rage. As this rage consumes him, he decides to avenge his mother's death. Actually, he doesn't decide to do this, taking time to ponder the thought, it's his first reaction. Perhaps there is an already underlying notion of the dark side, or merely a display of immaturity. Was he too old when he began his training as the Jedi Council had originally thought?

The part that is interesting to me is as he's killing the Sand People, Yoda is sensing a jolt in the force, a very strong one and then a voice says, "Anakin, Anakin, no!" It's the voice of Qui-gon.

We all know that this is the first time that Anakin seriously crosses the line of the Jedi Code. Qui-gon's reaction seems to be confirmation of that and I feel that it's a pivotal point in the movie. I think Qui-gon sensed at this point that Anakin is about to head down the wrong path. It's also interesting that Qui-gon and Yoda react but Obi-wan doesn't feel anything in the force at that moment. Obi-wan and Anakin are so close... they've been together for what, 8-10 years at this point? Why doesn't he feel anything?

This leads to one of the most touching parts of the movie for me, the garage scene. Anakin is so upset about the loss of his mother AND for what he's done. He knows that what he's done is unforgivable, killing everyone in the Tusken village, including the women and children... but at the same time, he is almost proud of his accomplishment and abilities... I mean, killing an entire village alone is no small feat! This is his first taste of power and he likes it deep down. Palpatine will later use what happened that night against Anakin in an attempt to make him feel unworthy as a Jedi.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts on this....
