Mustafar in San Diego

Hey gang,

I'm home with my boys today. Not sure if you've heard but San Diego currently has six fires burning. Schools are closed, freeways are closed, 100,000 acres have burned, and 250,000 people have been evacuated from their homes.

It started Friday when the "Santa Ana's" began which is a weather condition down here in SoCal (Southern California). It consists of very dry air (we're at 6% humidity right now), very high winds (40-50 mph gusts), and very HOT temps. Its going to be 90 degrees at the beaches today and our dewpoint is -2!!!! Obviously this is a deadly mixture for fires. They're having trouble fighting these because of the high wind and smoke. Watching the news right now and folks, so many homes are burning....

The closest fire to me right now is 15 miles away so I'm sure we'll be ok, but if you would, please send your thoughts/ prayers to my 250,000 neighbors who have had to leave their homes....

date Posted: Oct 22, 2007 12:31 PM I don't watch the news much- stations don't come in all that well when you have no cable/satellite. No money for bill. Anyhow, sorry to hear about that! Here's to hoping that they can be contained as quickly as they can and keep the further spread. The number of people fleeing is at 250,000 right now I believe. Keep us informed on your situation.

date Posted: Oct 22, 2007 1:41 PM I was watching coverage of this on the news today. I hope you stay out of harms way, it sucks that so many have had to leave their homes. Fire sucks especially in high winds and is pretty frightening.

date Posted: Oct 22, 2007 2:48 PM Wow. Glad you are okay. 15 miles doesn't seem like a very safe distance to me. Fires can change direction and travel quickly so take care of yourselves. Though I'm sure there is terrain to bring into the equation too. If it is any consilation we had snow here yesterday, but I guess it wouldn't be. Prayers given to all!

date Posted: Oct 22, 2007 3:58 PM Well good thing you havent been evacuated yet. From earthquakes to forest fires. California sounds like a nice place until you get them. Now it sounds miserable. Not to be mean but it sounds like the government isnt prepared for this very well.

date Posted: Oct 22, 2007 5:03 PM I'm in Point Loma and I'm seeing people from North County and East County driving in to stay with friends and relatives or to seek out the motels around here. My office was closed today and will be closed tomorrow. Even though I'm not in any of the danger zones, I'm praying this will be over soon.

date Posted: Oct 22, 2007 5:16 PM Thanks everyone. We've been ok but now Im scared. The Red Cross put a note on my door of where we are to go in case of evacuation. The Fallbrook fires are out of control. That is two cities away guys.... keep the prayers coming please...

Earthquakes, fires, I may rethink my future plans of moving down there.

Glad you're all right. Heard about it on the news, but didn't know it was in your area. I've heard they developed a kind of gel that helps homes survive those massive fires. It's supposed to last something like 3-4 hours and costs somewhere around $300 to spread over an entire house.
