Were Owen and Beru waiting for Luke?
I've been wondering about something for a while now: At the end of Revenge of the Sith, were Owen and Beru expecting Obi-Wan to arrive with baby Luke? I have seen the movie four times now, read the novel, and played the video game; but nothing has really shed any light on my vapid mind. Granted it's not really important to the plot or anything of that nature but I'm just plain curious given the way Owen and Beru react to Obi-Wan. It didn't look like much of a conversation took place, which I think would be odd when someone arrives out of nowhere and gives you a baby which he expects you to take care of. While Beru seems delighted to be the new mother to this child and is the only one to greet Obi-Wan upon his arrival, Owen stands several yards away, almost like he's trying to keep a safe distance between himself and this strange Jedi. Perhaps he believed Palpatine's claim about the Jedi being enemies of the Republic? But Beru, a little more open minded and trusting, welcomed the Jedi and took the youth in her care. Owen, now Uncle Owen, finally shows some signs of joy and calm when his wife shows Luke to him.

So what does this tell us? It possibly tells us why Uncle Owen doesn't trust Old Ben in A New Hope and why he especially wouldn't trust Luke's father, Anakin having been a Jedi and going down hill from there. But the big question still goes unanswered as to whether or not Obi-Wan just showed up at the Lars homestead unexpectedly or if the Lars knew ahead of time that Obi-Wan was coming. Now, when it was decided where the twins would go there was one man who would have had the power and influence to be able to get a message to the Lars without the Emperor knowing--Bail Organa. If he was able to get a message to the Lars telling them what had transpired but that their nephew survived, that would explain the quick exchange between Obi-Wan and Beru. Obi-Wan needed to drop Luke off and make himself scarce as soon as possible and besides Owen was probably not too fond of him being there anyway.

Meditate on this, I will

Also, the last time Owen had contact with a Jedi that we know of (Anakin), it was associated with the death of his mother. So Jedi must bring back bad emotions for Owen.

That's a good observation, thanks for mentioning this. Not only did his encounter with Anakin end with the terrible death of Shmi but Owen finally meets his stepbrother who leaves immediately after she's buried. So, you're right, the Jedi probably left a bad taste in Owen's mouth.

Very obviously, Obi-Wan called ahead, and had a conversation with them before he came to the homestead to deliver Luke to them. We don't see this because A), it's boring, b) it's a waste of screentime (I estimate that it would take about 5 minutes), and C) it's so obvious what they would be talking about that anyone could write this scene themselves.

I agree with Rayten, about Obi-Wan contacting them ahead of time

I think Owen's attitude, when we first see them, has more to do with the fact he is most likely aware of the risk they are taking by accepting Luke
(and the possibility, he knows about Anakin becoming Darth Vader or
about the jedi purge & what could happen if Luke is force sensitive & the empire finds out about it)
I say this because of the conversation he has with Beru in ANH....
"Luke's not a farmer, he has too much of his father in him"-Beru
"that's what I'm afraid of"-Owen

cont..

I say this because why & what would make Owen say that, unless he was privy to some information as to why Luke was brought to them (in the outer rim area) instead of Padme's relatives and why Obi-Wan hung around afterwards
as well as his fears about Luke being like his father

Thanks for posting Rayten and JediKnight Robb.

I think you're both right. So much was cut from the film already that to add something that's rather unnecessary could mean sacrificing something else that is more crucial to the plot. Plus, there are only two possibilties: either Obi-Wan contacted them ahead of time or he didn't. But like I said, it's more a point of curiousity than anything else.

I think Obi-Wan called ahead after he arrived on Tatooine. No need to drag Bail Organa into it.

Well, I was thinking that he's a Jedi, and I don't know how he would call ahead exactly, but it seems that that Palpatine would have his agents on high alert for Jedi fleeing to outer rim planets to hide. But then again, Obi-Wan is perfectly capable of taking care of himself because he IS a Jedi. Good point, Valin Kenobi.

its funny, i was just thinking about this the other night after seeing the movie again.
the lars had to know that Obi-Wan was on his way with luke.
i also agree that Owen knew what became of Anakin, and thats why made that comment in ANH. "thats what im afraid of."
good question.

I'm not sure but... they would have no way of knowing. Reason 1: They are on an isolated planet. Reason 2: Nobody except, Yoda, Obi-Wan, Bail Organa and very few others knew of Padme's pregnancy in the first place. So how could they know of Padme's death much less the twin's birth.

Nice blog. The simplicity of that scene reminds me of a school nativity play where no-one says anything.

I think your observations are right Z-score. Especially about Owen being afraid of Jedi, possibly.
