After offering my take on the war between the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, we cannot forget the third player in the showdown: Nintendo's Wii.
The Wii is arguably the most revolutionary gaming system since the release of the original Nintendo. While the the other gaming giants went for stunning visuals Nintendo decided to go another whole direction. As many of you know the Wii developed a type of gameplay similar to virtual reality where one actually makes motions with the controller and then sees their results on the screen. Nintendo has gone all in, if the Wii succeeds Nintendo will secure it's place as the best and now, clearly the most innovative of the three developers. If it fails though, Nintendo will be facing consecutive 3rd place finishes in the console war, and it would also be unlikely that the motion sensing technology in the Wii would reappear for several years.
But the possibility of success for Nintendo here is outstanding. Nintendo has revolutionized the video game industry, they have made video gaming an active and immersing experience. Also the system is being marketing the market groups that would never have considered buying a system until now. The Wii isn't just for the kids or for the hardcore gamers, it's for everyone.
Already the results of Nintendo's innovation can be seen. Sony added motion sensing to the PS3 controller at the last minute after they heard what Nintendo was planning. The next microsoft system will probably include motion sensing as well.
The greatest thing about Nintendo's revolution is that it has the possibility of leaving people bored with their Xbox 360s or PS3s, simply because they just aren't the same as being actually part of the game. If the Wii takes off it could leave the rather dull PS3 and Xbox in the dust.
My theory: The Wii is set to experience a boom. It is innovative, fun, and universal. It isn't a matter of should I get an Xbox 360, a PS3, or a Wii? Instead the question will be should I get a Wii and then should I get an Xbox or a PS3? Because of the Wii's $250 price tag this kind of thinking is quite possible. Where as Microsoft and Sony will most likely split the market, Wii will be able to convince Xbox and Playstation fans to buy a Wii to supplement their other systems.
