The State of the Star Wars Community on the Net
I wrote about this before on my own website www.lightsabre.co.uk a few years ago, in the time between Phantom and Clones, and the question is - where have all the good sites gone?
Today I took a really in-depth look around the SW fan community, and where I would once find a site like TF.N updating 6 or 7 times a day, with multiple site staff it can now go for days on end with nothing.
Where there used to be a multitude of fan sites, fiction sites, artists, chat sites, news sites, now there is very little.
In fact, the main thrust of Star Wars action on the net is in chat rooms and blogs like this.
Even back when I wrote the article I was disappointed that so few of us from the TPM days were still out there. Great sites like Jedi Girl SSR, Bantha Tracks, Wattos Junkyard - all long gone. Jedi Net is still there, but Episode X has gone. Naboo Online hasn't updated for eons, SWSouce.net has given up out of frustration.
I know there is hardly any news out there at the moment. After all, we have no rumours of a new trilogy, no new flick to wait for. But there are the books, comics, rumours of the TV shows, box office updates, DVD news, fan activities, fiction, artwork, interviews to be done. Come on people, Star Trek fans have NOTHING at the moment, and between the net and convention participation they are putting SW fans to shame. And we KNOW we have 2 new shows on the way!
Like I said at the top of the page, sometimes this will be a grumble, but as I take a look around it seems (and this isn't intended to be my site blowing its own trumpet) that Lightsabre and the official site are the only two updating daily.
And that is a BAD thing.
So come on, any cool sites out there who I haven't mentioned get in touch. Send me an angry email berating me for not mentioning you (and none of our pesky affiliates can do that - you know we love all you guys!) and let's start the next era of Star Wars fan involvement!
