What Killed Yoda?
Here's a question for anyone listening that occured to me this week :
Yoda trained Jedi for 800 years, and was 900 when he died. At the time of Revenge of the Sith he was physically as strong as ever ("Size matters not" etc), obviously battered by his confrontation with Palpatine but in one piece. His pride was in tatters and his confidence was low, but essentially he was alright.
(As far as we know) he didn't leave Dagobah in those 22 years between Sith and Empire, so apart from possible contact with Obi Wan he would have been alone and, importantly, not training Jedi.
In the year between Empire and Jedi Yoda deteriorated rapidly into a frail little man. So, my question to anyone reading is - was it the exertion of training Luke Skywalker that killed Yoda? Or are other factors at play here?

Well, he has to die sometime- that is the way of things, and he was quite old I would say.

I think that's a good question, and its something I've been thinking about for a long time. Yes, he had to die sometime, but there was still something that brought 900 years of life to a close. It might as well have happened at 800, but he was still strong all the way through until the last few years of his life. My thoughts are that it was the exertion of training Luke. In fact, lifing the X-Wing out of the swamp seemed to have made him extremely tired. Did he have any physical exertion after he did this?

That's true, after he lifted the X-Wing (which was likely the toughest force-related thing he had done since the prequels) he does nothing else physical - and all of this to illustrate to Luke the power of the Force and what can be acheived.
It makes you think, in those few short weeks he trained Luke from raw talent into being strong enough to go a few rounds with Darth Vader (although we know Anakin had his own agenda - offering Luke the chance to join him, just like Dooku had offered Ben, and he had offered Padme).

That exertion must have been tremendous - a Jedi in the prequel era took YEARS to train, and if you look at it in the most generous light, from when Luke met Ben to defeating Vader in battle and helping him fulfil his prophecy it was a mere four years.
Yeah, thinking about it Moose, Yoda lifting the X-Wing was practically a sacrifice, to show Luke the power of the Force.
Cool...

If you ask me he gave up his spirit that he had been holding on too for so long. "Rest I must earned it I have."

I basically agree with all of that: after all, it's in the films. But there are still points you could contend with.
He was old, had nothing left to live for and had become sick.
But what made him sick?
Nothing left to live for? He didn't know if Luke would win, couldn't predict it. And what of reuniting the twins and helping shape their destiny? True, he became one with the Force, but he didn't help Luke the way Ben did

(although you could say that Yoda was as much rooting for Vader to `see the light' as Luke was. After all, it was certainly the last chance for Anakin to fulfill the Prophecy of the Chosen One)
He was old - well, no getting away from that is there :-p
Plenty to think about, but unless the Flannelled One says otherwise we only know what we saw on the screen.
Thing is, Star Wars is so ripe for interpretation it's not funny. Guess that's why we love it so much.

I know the answer to this question.

Yoda pretended to die so Luke would go away and stop annoying him.

I think old age just got him. Happens to the best. Also i think when the jedi died in ep3 it took it out on him, I think if order 66 happen come, he would have defeated Palp.

If you need an explanation beyond old age, I'd say it's "My work here is done."

I agree with Makabe and I would also like to add that lifting the ship out of the swamp probably didn't exhaust Yoda because as he said, "Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter."

I think it's also possible that living so close to the cave, with it exerting dark side energy, could have been a factor in Yoda getting sick, and once he finished training Luke, he could then become one with the Force. But basically, I think he just died from living a very long time. It is a good observation though. Good entry.

I think it was because of old age and the strees. Plue I think depression also played a factor of Yoda's death because think about it if you lost all you friends would'nt you be depressed. But Yoda just might of been sick like he said in the movie. You never know.

My impression was that Yoda was hanging on until he laid the groundwork for blance to come to the Force again. I think, he just kin of let go once Luke was trained because his work was finished.

I believe that in Luminous form, like Qui-Gon, Ben and finally Anakin, he would be able to assit Luke in starting the Jedi Academy and training the twins and others that follow. In this form the three most powerful Jedi would be there to train the next generation of Jedi.
