Shoot to Miss
They ran down corridors...
They swung across chasms...
They dodged hot laser death down prison cell bays...
They even managed to take out four TIE Fighters and escape the Death Star...
But who was leading who on a merry chase?
When you boil practically the entire Death Star sequence down to a logical conclusion there can be only one end result.
Princess Leia was right.
She knew the Empire was tracking them, despite Han's (incorrect)protestations. Which means, if you go back to the action of just a few minutes before every Stromtrooper was shooting to miss. Every Stormtrooper was placing himself in harms way, knowing he would likely be shot, but also knowing that he couldn't harm the fugitives.
Othewise, how would they find the hidden Rebel base?
Put in that context it's a different film you're watching.
Where's the danger/?
Answer - there is none.
Perhaps even Ben deactivating the power for the energy field was `allowed' - it was all a part of the plan.
After Ben's manipulations to bring Luke away from Tatooine it's entirely possible that once Tarkin and Vader realise that Kenobi is alive, and that the Falcon can lead them to the hidden Rebel base (after they've freed the Princess) that everything from then until the attack on the Death Star is merely an elaborate, stage-managed romp through the station.
1977 - I miss the innocence...
