Well, I just completed my Star Wars all-day Episode I through Episode VI viewing. It lasted roughly from 7:00 in the morning to 10:00 at night. That's quite some time.
I've been taking notes all day. They're rough, but I find some points somewhat interesting. It's my first perspective of the saga as a whole.
The six movies really work well together. The shift from Prequels to Originals wasn't even particularly drastic. I didn't really notice, other than to notice I wasn't noticing.
I put in each new movie directly after the last, except for when I went to Episode III, when I had a 15 minute (or so) cushion on either side. The movies actually kind of start to blend together, but certainly not in a bad way. It's just kind of a subconscious thing; thinking of it all as different eras in one movie, not split up into individual installments. My policy was to never pause, even if I had to leave for a minute. As such, I missed a very small portion of the movies. That didn't really make a difference, though; a few minutes out of over 14 hours isn't noticeable.
I probably couldn't have watched Clone Wars Volume One in-between Episodes II and III unless I had woken up significantly early, at about 6:00. However, those doing this with all movies on DVD -- and therefore not restricted by movie showtimes -- could likely fit it in. Still, I wouldn't; it's different enough visually that I think it would disrupt the flow. You certainly could if you wanted to, though.
If you have the stamina, and if you love Star Wars, I would suggest doing this at some point. You're likely to notice a lot more about each film.
This was my twelfth time seing Episode III. I have now seen it exactly as many times as I saw Episodes I and II in theaters combined. For my eleventh viewing of
Sith I came in a little late, right at the end of the opening scroll -- but for my sixth viewing of Episode I I also came in a little late.
I'm currently watching Clone Wars as a kind of epilogue; a minute ago I finished R2-D2: Beneath the Dome. Here is a list of links to all my Marathon-related content. The notes are rough; I'll be cleaning them up at some point.
