Prequel Generation Questions A New Hope
For years we've speculated what it might be like for the first generation of Star Wars fans who watch the saga "in order"... Episode I, II, III then IV, V and VI. For me, speculation became observation as my barely-7-year-old son watched A New Hope after having seen ROTS twice. My boy is very knowledgable about the prequels, but hasn't seen ANH since he was four. For all intents and purposes, this was like a "first viewing" for him.

Here is a selection of his many, many questions... none of which I had when I saw ANH at the age of six...

- after recognizing the Tantive IV corridore, "Hey, they didn't have all those people in there before. Where did they get them."

- later in that same scene, "Are the Republic troops clones too? They all look the same?" (Of course, by Republic troops he meant what we've always called Rebels. But being on an Alderaan ship... who is correct?)

- "Wow! Is the Death Star done already? I guess that's how you know that a long time has passed."

- "Look... Obi-Wan is pretending he doesn't know R2-D2." (see Hole/No-hole: Why doesn't Obi-Wan remember R2? )

- in Ben's hut: "Where is Qui-Gon? I thought Obi-Wan was supposed to be training with him?"

- as C-3PO throws a Jawa body on the pile... "Do you think that R2-D2 started that fire with his jet rockets?"

- "How can the Emperor dissolve the Senate? Didn't he destroy it trying to kill Yoda?"

- "Is Chewbacca the only Wookiee that survives the Clone Wars?" (with great concern)

- "Why don't those ships need Hyperspace rings?"

- "So, does this mean that R2-D2 is really the main character in Star Wars?"

- and finally, though not prequel-provoked, "Why are red leader and gold leader the leaders? They don't know what they're doing..."

These are all making me think. What a blast seeing Star Wars with fresh eyes. Stay tuned for a report when we screen "The Empire Strikes Back".

I like - and finally, though not prequel-provoked, "Why are red leader and gold leader the leaders? They don't know what they're doing..."

hehe, however this does go to prove my point that it is better to have those who have not seen the OT to watch them in order PT first then OT. other blogs and forums have asked this one. I for one (having seen OT in the old days) enjoyed the scenes in EP4 where obi wan fights vader, it has much more meaning and emotion in it now after having seen their first duel on Mustafar!

Well, seeing the PT before the OT makes NO SENSE AT ALL ...
GL could have 100% adapt the PT with the OT ... but he didn't .... for
a reason or another he didn't ...... and so that's what GL did and that is
what we have to follow in order to enjoy The SW movies ....

Moreover, that's what we have to direct our kids, friends and all the new
generation of SW to see the OT Before seeing the PT .... And to consider
the PT as a very long FLASHBACK
...... and that's the way it is I guess ...

However, I really enjoyed the YOUNGLING questions ...
Waiting for more ....

Yeah, just joined this site, I have a question about the final scene in ROTJ. At the end we see the spirits of Obi-won, Yoda, and Anakin/Vader, but why isn't Qui-gon there? Isn't he the one who found the way back from death? I don't know... I just recently got into the whole SW genre and have seen all of the movies multiple times. It seems like GL got really Skimpy over the Qui-gon character after Phantom Menace, is that because Liam Neeson just did'nt want to do anymore SW movies? Does any one know?

Weswindu 1:
One rational explanation is the folowing.Luke can see only souls of Yoda,Ben,and his father, because he meet them during their lives.Qui-Gon lived in another time.Yoda can see him,but Luke can not.
This idea implies that words: "obtaining immortality" for dead jedy is truth only from "certain point of view"!.Dead jedy can make contact only with the living person if that person was somehow atached to him during his life, and of course that person must be strong in the Force.

That of course is only my point of view.

I heard that GL re-editet ROTJ and put Hayden instead of the old Anakin, when the ghost appear. That seems like an odd choice, since Luke would have no way of knowing how his father looked when he was young. And why would he be younger, while the others appear at the age of their death? Please , someone tell me it's not true!

Always a person with a new perspective, ready to challenge the rest of us who thought we had thought of every possible question, discrepancy, and disaster and formulated a very convoluted and intelligent answer.

BTW, I do believe that R2-D2 can now be named the unofficial official main character...

i like your sons enthusaism!!
isnt GL going re-remake all the movies so they fit tohether well? i heard that somewhere,

as for his questions, why we never see qui gon has been bothering me too, i kinda hoped he'd have been in ep iii, but he wasn't. (not physically anyway) but perhaps obiwan can merly hear him, his voice. Maybe later on yoda had taught obiwan to retain his physical form so he could appear to luke. as for anakin, as the chosen he didn't need teaching.

Tell him, "Just watch the movie".

Yes George Luca$ inserted Hayden into the final ghosts scene in ROTJ. The reason he is young is his spirit reverted back to when he ceased being Anakin Skywalker and became "Darth Vader".

Enjoyed this one since I have an 8 year old daughter; unfortunately she is not a Star Wars fan so I love reading about the kids who love Star Wars. Thank God I have a nephew who loves the movies.

Like everyone else, I cannot wait for your child's reaction to Empire. My daughter's favorite scene is Han's reply to Leia "Who's scruffy lookin'?"

Lol. This was published in Insider, Issue 83. I just got it two days ago. Quite Funny. Makes me think what I said when I saw those movies... "Daddy Daddy! Can you build me an X-Wing? I wanna get those white guys. It's out of style!"

Sorry, I just have a question for soberjedi24...I'm very interested to know when/where you heard that GL might re-make the movies? Everything I've heard is to the contrary.

To Ghent: I got a kick out of your blog! My daughter is a pre-schooler, and I cant' wait until she's old enough to watch the movies with me and I can observe her reactions! Your kid sounds very observant!

That you for sharing that very cool story. I would love to see the films from start (Episode I) to finish (Episode VI) with a child or anyone who would get into it and hear and see the expression on their face(s).

The "Republic" troops was an especially interesting comment, mostly because the Senate hadn't been entirely dissolved until sometime in Episode IV.

I appreciated his Wookiee comment and your adding "with great concern". I was moved when Yoda said he had good relations with the Wookiees, since Yoda and Chewbacca are about as different as "people" can get.

Finally, someone who has seen the movies in order, and can provide a good point of view.

Great blog, and MTFBWY!
