As the father of three (ages 7, 3 and 2), I've been often asked in the past few weeks about the appropriateness of the film for a younger audience.
The best advice I can give is to heed the intention of the rating: PG-13. If someone under 13 is going to see the film, it should involve guidance of a parent. Parents know their kids and know what is or isn't appropriate.
The second thing I would advise is: go see it yourself first. Not only will you be able to see the whole thing once without a bathroom break, but you will be in a position to judge for yourself.
The night before I was to take my son to a special screening, I discussed with him the small handful of potentially "scary" moments... talking about what would happen, how it fit the story, the choices and consequences of actions that lead up to them, etc. I did a refresher in the car on the way, assuring him that there would be no problem to leave or close his eyes at any time.
The preparation strategy was perfect. As I predicted, the only scene he considered "scary" wasn't one that you hear about in the press anyhow. It's something that happens in Palpatine's office. Scenes in lava and on operating tables were quickly forgotten to fondly recall chases and escapes and droids spitting motor oil.
I was six when I saw
A New Hope, and that experience greatly contributed to the person I am today.
Star Wars is definitely for kids and for the part of adults that doesn't want to grow up. It was a great joy to share that with my son.
Your experience may vary.
