Mr. Lucas on Toy Story 10th Anniversary DVD
I love DVDs. Better yet... DVDs with audio commentaries from the show's creators. It's a pretty regular activity for me to swing by my local Target on Tuesdays and pick up a new release. (Which they inexplicably sell below cost on release day... bumping the price up to normal after that.)

OK, I'm off topic in my own blog now... so, the Toy Story 10th Anniversary two-disc set came out yesterday. Pop in disc one and there are two menu options before "Play Movie". There's a one-minute intro, and a 16 minute "Legacy" piece.

"Legacy" is a piece of famous and not-famous members of the movie community talking about the legacy and influence of Toy Story. Low and behold, George Lucas is among them, talking about his initial reactions to the film, and later on empathizing with the boy next door who tortured the toys.

I'd forgotten how many Star Wars references there were in the movie... particularly Sid who desperately wants the secrets to the hidden rebel base, and Buzz who holds the plans and secret weakness to an evil weapon that could destroy a planet.

Also featured in the "Legacy" piece is a skinny Peter Jackson. I'm not sure exactly what he spoke about, because I couldn't get over his crazy hair. The man looked like he might be homeless, were it not for the posh surroundings. I've been watching his antics and new appearance on kongisking.net, but this look was most freaky.

One last note about the DVD... disc 2 features a highly-staged "casual chat" among the clearly close-knit four story leads. This is unintentionally very sad as Joe Ranft passed away just a few weeks ago in a car accident.

As influential as Toy Story was, it's nice to see what an impact Star Wars was on it. Technology in support of character and story. That's what we're all about.
