Sith turn tables on Pirates

You've likely heard many reports about the phenominal success of Pirates II last weekend. I enjoyed the flick more than many reviewers, but really didn't see their Sith-shattering performance coming. It's great news for the movie industry, but not so great for those of us insanely "cheering" for our favorite films using box-office as an arbitrary score-card.

On Tuesday, though you'd never know it, Pirates actually failed to outperform on the fastest-pace scale. Check out the best five-day openings at Box-Office Mojo.

Ta da! Sith's first five days netted $172M with Pirates 2 at $169M.

If the trend continues, then Sith's record for fastest $200M and fastest $300M should be safe... at least until the next big thing comes down in a few months. It may also mean that Pirates ends up lower on the all-time list.

The only reason 'Pirates 2' did the boffo box-office it did was for one reason: Johnny Depp...that's it. People love his take on Jack Sparrow and wanted to see it again regardless of how good or bad the story was. Will they be willing to see this movie more than once? I doubt it. Despite criticism to the contrary, Star Wars is more complicated and far richer than Pirates, and most movies, will ever be. Will we still be talking about Pirates 2 in a decade...nope. Will we still be talking Star Wars (all six films) in that same time frame...yep.

date Posted: Jul 16, 2006 10:48 AM Don't forget Pirates opened in 4 to 5 hundred more theaters. Somethings going to have a bigger opening sooner or later anyway. Ticket prices are always going up.
