First Day of School and Changes
"You can't stop change any more than you can stop the suns from setting." -- Shmi Skywalker, Episode I

Today was the first day of kindergarten for my daughter -- my middle child. I don't know if it's because she attended pre-school last year, or because I also have a third-grader, but I wasn't particularly emotional about the actual dropping off. Perhaps because she was nervous, and I was being strong for her.

It was a day thick with personal crossroads, though.

Perhaps I'll reflect on today differently years from now, but my mind was more on the day marking some more significant changes in my family's adventures.

If you're familiar with my blog, perhaps you noticed that my screen name is now purple where is was once green. I've given up my position as Director of Lucas Online at Lucasfilm. While it goes without saying that seven years at Lucasfilm was a dream come true, I will now be watching StarWars.com each day as a fan... just like you. (Of course, I have some insight on what's coming... and let me assure you it's worth watching for!)

My family and I have moved back to Canada. We're in Calgary now, a province away from Saskatoon where I grew up. We loved and missed California, but it is nice to be "home". My kids have only really known California, so this will be interesting for them. We were away seven years... long enough for me to now feel a little like a foreigner in my own country. :)

I will likely blog more in the future about my career plans, but they are of an entrepreneurial nature and centered in the field of entertainment. That makes them both exciting and also anything but certain.

So, this is the day I'd set for myself to stop transitioning, and to start the course in the new direction. So far, so good.

( Lest you think I'm giving up Star Wars... you have no idea how excited I am for LEGO Star Wars II on September 12! )

Purple, Green... either way, still the color of a Jedi Master!

Good luck with everything in the Great White North, and great to hear that you'll keep blogging!

I cannot wait for the next installment of Evasive Action!!. Sorry I had to put that out there. Yeah Legos Star Wars is going to be awesome. I like how we are getting the games in chronological order. I hope the kids adjust to thier new surroundings, I know it must have been tough leaving friends behind. Good luck to you sir!

(Again thanks for everything)

we miss you around the office, that's for sure.
there's no one here to talk about trash TV with, or who mocks my Netflix list.
*sigh*

I know what you mean about transitions. Both my padawans will graduate from their respective schools in June - my eldest from high school, my youngest from middle school (8th grade). It's a year wrought with changes. Yesterday, my eldest came home from school and said, "This is my last 'first day' of school." (It's off to college next fall, where she will study film. Her goal is to direct.) My youngest is looking forward to the challenge of high school (she wants to do special effects for her sister!). When I look ahead to spring, I find myself tamping down the emotions. However, I shouldn't get wrapped up in what's ahead. "Be mindful of the present," a wise Jedi urged. I'll try to take his advice!

Best of luck. Cannot wait to see what you get into and come up with in the years to come. We all had a good run.

While I congratulate you for all your excellent work while you were head of Lucas Online, and I wish you the best of luck whatever you do from now on....

Can't I apply for your old position? ;)

That's a big move after seven years. And a big move for a child into kindergarten.
I wish you all the best in adjusting and settling in.

Good luck and good journeys, Ghent. And I'm surprised no one has said this yet, but also a very hearty . . .

May the Force be with you. :)

MTFBWY indeed. I was a bit perplexed seeing your name in purple, and now I'm sad to hear you're moving on from your Lucasfilm job... but glad to hear you'll still be around.

I hope the move has gone smoothly for you and your family. And I look forward to hearing about your future plans. "We will watch your career with great interest..."

And finally, I too am rather excited about LEGO Star Wars II - the sequel to a game that (somewhat surprisingly, frankly) actually managed the difficult task of appealing to all ages. Four days left! :D

I just now found this post, cause I've been away for a long time. I was wondering why you had changed to purple... :)

Hope everything's going great for you in Calgary! I've always loved western Canada.

StarWars.com came a long way during your time in charge! Thank you so much for everything!
