For this blog, I'm going to present you with a little project that I began working on towards the end of last year. I decided back then that I was going to read all the Star Wars novels in chronological order for the first time.
Being an avid reader of the EU since it's rebirth in 1992 with Timothy Zahn's magnificent Thrawn Trilogy, I was looking forward to this adventure. I then decided that if I'm going to read the various SW novels in chronological order, I should probably add all the short stories from the various Tales Of.....anthologies as well, and while I was at it, I may as well throw in the ones available here on Hyperspace at good ol' sw.com. And just for good measure, I should also add the ones that have been printed in the Star Wars Insider to my growing reading list also.
As I sat thinking about beginning this endeavour, I thought I should add a few of the SW graphic novels that I own that are referenced in the novels and short stories (i.e. the events of the Darth Maul graphic novel is mentioned in the novel Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter). Next, I thought I would add some of the graphic novels that I don't yet own but will purchase as soon as time and money allows.
I then realised, that I would need to add the Clone Wars Cartoon to the equation since I own these on DVD and it would be nice to incorporate these into my reading order, but from reading Nathan Butler's Star Wars Timeline, I already knew that the chapters of the Clone Wars Cartoon took place over the 3 years that the Clone Wars rage, and that some of the stories would take place in between these cartoon chapters. But how and where, I knew not!
As you can see, things were starting to get out of hand. I needed a timeline! There are quite few timelines out there, but none seemed to meet my needs. I needed a timeline that in a quick glance, I would know what I was supposed to be reading next. I hummed and hawed over doing my very own timeline for a few months, and thanks to a few very good friends (see blog roll on your left!), I was convinced to go ahead with this one.
To create my own chronologically correct reading timeline, I had to consult a few of the others that are circulating in the realms of cyberspace. My first port of call was Nathan's Butler's truly magnificent (and not to mention exhaustive) Star Wars Timeline Gold. If you haven't already seen this timeline, then you can download it here. It will keep you glued to your pc for days!
Next it was over to theforce.net's Ultimate Timeline. Although nowhere near as massive and informative as Nathan's timeline, I nevertheless found this an invaluble resource in creating my own timeline.
Finally, I looked to The Official Star Wars Fact File that was released here in the UK a few years back.
With the help from these three different sources, and my own researching of the novels, I finally came up with my very own timeline which I am happy to share with you all here. It is my hope that you too will find this timeline helpful to you in any way possible.

Some stories overlap and, from time to time, I have placed these parallell stories or chapters together (i.e. the opening chapters of the Approaching Storm and Attack Of The Clones. And also the entire Jedi Academy Trilogy and I' Jedi), however, if I feel that it isn't needed in a dramatic sense (i.e. the first couple of chapters of Dark Lord: The Rise Of Darth Vader takes place during Revenge Of The Sith and the first chapter of X-Wing 8: Isard's Revenge takes place during the final stages of The Thrawn Trilogy 3: The Last Command) then these stories are listed seperately. And, yet again, some stories take place during others that I have delibrately left seperate so as to not interfere with the other story. This is especailly true with the OT adaptations and the various Tales Of .....stories that take place at specific events during the OT's story. However, the Han Solo Trilogy is continually interupted. This is because this trilogy was especially written this way to accomodate both the Lando Calrissian and Han Solo Adventures. I then preceeded to put in any other stories that take place during the Han Solo Trilogy, figuring that if it's already interupted, then a couple of times more won't hurt. The Han Solo Trilogy takes place over a number of years anyway, and I feel that the inclusion of these other stories during this trilogy will help convey the passage of time better.
As you probably know, there are various titles that carry the name "Knights Of The Old Republic". I'm not interested in games for this timeline, so the two KOTOR pc games aren't listed here, only the graphic novels. I then took the liberty of changing the name of one of them so as to not cause confusion. The one I've changed is the original KOTOR graphic novel, which I have changed to the title given it and it's sequels in the Official Star Wars Fact File - Legacy Of The Sith. Therefore, the Knights Of The Old Republic which appears in my timeline is the one currently being published by Dark Horse comics.
I have also included links to the front covers of the novels and graphic novels. For the short stories that are also available here at sw.com in Hyperspace I have provided links to these stories as well.
It is entirely up to you, the individual, how you wish to read these stories, if indeed you are intending to read any of the magnificent saga that is the Star Wars Expanded Universe.

n.b. I will be updating this timeline regularly as new novels are announced or released.

DATING CONVENTION: All dates are shown according to the dating standard based on the Battle of Yavin and the destruction of the first Death Star. This is taken as calendar zero point which established the beginning of the current era. Events that preceded the historic battle are listed as years BBY, those that took place after it are listed as ABY.
