For Obi-Wan Week: True Love Lasts 6 Billiion Years
Obi-Wan Week. A heavy responsibility for an Obi-Wan lover like me, after all, I named my cat Obi-Wan Katnobi.

Obi-Wan had his virtues and his faults, like any other Jedi, and his fans and his detractors, like any other character in the Saga.

In Episode 1, Obi-Wan is still a Padawan Learner, young and uptight, but not without a sense of humor. He is brave in fighting Darth Maul, and makes a pledge to his dying master to train Anakin, even though it doesn't appear to be a wise decision.

In Episode 2, Obi-Wan is the stressed out Master to a teenaged Padawan. If you've ever had a teenager, you can probably relate. If you ARE a teenager, then well.... You know how your parents are.

I prefer the Episode 3 Obi-Wan, the Jedi Master who knows who he is and what he's doing. He shows no fear, only confidence. He faces Dooku with confidence, and General Greivous with the knowledge he will probably die in the encounter. When his troops turn on him he finds a way to survive.

When he learns the Jedi Homing Beacon is sending out a false signal he insists on going to the Temple to change it for no other reason than to save other Jedi lives. He shows no fear in fighting his way into the Temple to accomplish that mission. He faces the carnage inside without losing his cool.

He doesn't want to kill Anakin, but he goes on the mission, as is his duty. When he realizes there no turning Anakin back he goes about his business as a Jedi "I will do what I must." (I will kill you rather than have you be a Sith.)

Even after seeing Anakin's atrocities in the Temple, even after Anakin is trying to hill him, still he blames himself. "I have failed you Anakin, I have failed you." (I couldn't take an already snarky 9-year old with emotional issues and turn him into a Jedi).

Obi-Wan takes the high ground in the duel, and shows no mercy when Anakin attacks him from below, even though he could have extended the fight.

"You were the chosen one!" (And you threw it all away over power, you stupid little twerp) "It was said you would destroy the Sith, not join them. (You weak minded, idealistic, fool.) "Bring balance to the Force, not leave it darkness. (You're the worst kind of traitor, killing your comrades to protect yourself and your own self-interests.)

"You were my brother, Anakin, I loved you." (I dedicated my life to you and you betrayed me, and all of your brothers and sisters to further your own ideals.)

Obi-Wan's only mistake was not making sure Anakin was dead, but after seeing him burning he walks away without looking back, his heart broken and his life in shambles.

Yet, he doesn't stop being a Jedi. He makes a desperate attempt to save Padme and her unborn babies.

The Episode 4 Obi-Wan has spent his life on an inhospitable planet to watch over young Luke, so that the Jedi will not become extinct. He teaches Luke the ways of the Force, in spite of the fears he must have of repeating his mistakes with Anakin.

And ultimately, he sacrifices his life so that a mission may succeed, although I believe that at that point he probably welcomed death, but he deserved better than that. A hero deserves to die at a very old age, in his own bed, surrounded by beautiful women, not a death at the hand of the man he should have killed twenty years earlier.

Obi-Wan Kenobi was born a Jedi and he died a Jedi, and every day in between he was the epitome of a Jedi Knight.

From a galaxy far, far away, and billions of years later, I love you, Obi-Wan.

I know.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is in the first couple minutes of TPM and in the last couple of minutes of ROTJ, with appearances in all the movies in between. It's just not the Star Wars saga without OWK.

An incredible tribute, g-w. Obi-wan epitomized what a Jedi should be. He has taken so much flak over the years, and it really is undeserving. Do I put Obi-wan on a pedestal? Absolutely not. He was a great Jedi. He was human. Too many forget that simple fact. A human who just happened to have some special abilities.

I was thinking about Obi-wan this weekend, especially regarding his name (after as1's recent blog). I know I've commented about that subject on one of your past blogs as well.

(. . .cont)

Some don't put much stock in the names GL chose for his characters, and that's their prerogative. I think of Obi-wan as he who keeps the Jedi Order together, going. The obi is the belt encircling the kimono, keeping everything securely in place, and that is, basically, how I see Obi-wan and his place in the Jedi Order. Many may disagree with me in this assessment, but that is their prerogative.

Great blog, granny-wan.

I prefer the Episode 3 Obi-Wan
I'll second that motion. I never cared much for him until Ep.3 and then... yum--so confident, witty and so good with his hands--I mean, he sure knows how to handle his light saber.:)

who knows who he is and what he's doing.
That's for sure, especially late at night when it's just me and him, all alone... :x:p:x

A hero deserves to die at a very old age, in his own bed, surrounded by beautiful women, Just like us, 'eh Granny?;)

Seriously though, the final scenes in Ep. 3 show what kind of a man Obi is and made me love him and feel his pain all the more.

"You were my brother, Anakin, I loved you."
Awesome... For what I think is the first time, Kenobi finally expresses his true feelings with regard to Anakin. For me, the statement has so much import as it resonates on multiple levels: the failure of the Order, of the Jedi, of Anakin, of the Republic, of Padme, and of Kenobi...as Anakin falls so does the galaxy.

However, like the proverbial phoenix, Kenobi, the Jedi, the Republic, and the Skywalkers RISE again!

Great Entry!

AMEN!!!
Too bad I won't die that way...darn...

who knows who he is and what he's doing.
Precisely. In fact, after seeing Episode III, I think that Obi-Wan is a lot cooler than Anakin (mobs, don't attack me!) because of that reason. I think that Kenobi was the most flexible of all the Jedi, and notice that he survived Order 66, so he isn't that bad. Compare that to Anakin, who got shoved down his path and was stuck there until his son returned him to the light side.

Wow, what a wonderful tribute to your main man! :x

Yet, he doesn't stop being a Jedi.
THAT is what amazes me most. He did what he knew in his heart he had to do, no matter what it meant (living the life of a hermit on a crappy planet, for example). What a guy...

I, too, connect most with ROTS Obi-Wan. We are lucky viewers, because we get to see him grow up before our eyes. In ROTS, he is truly a Jedi in all the title's glory, deserving nothing but respect and honor.

From a galaxy far, far away, and millions of years later, I love you, Obi-Wan.

He doesn't want to kill Anakin, but he goes on the mission, as is his duty. This statement here really struck me, G-W. Obi-Wan never faltered when it came to doing his "duty", or what was expected of him as a padawan, as a Jedi Knight, and as a Jedi Master seated on the Council. "You have made a commitment to the Jedi Order" Obi-wan AOTC. He was admirable, reputable, honest (from a certain point of view;)) , honorable, and most of all devoted to his best friend/brother until the very end. I say this because, even thru all the unthinkable, the unjust, and the treacherous things Anakin had done, Obi-Wan still looked on and trained Luke. Now that's unconditional love:x

Absolutely! Through all the pitfalls, lies, Anakin letting him down so badly, and all that occurred, his faith in being a Jedi never faltered. He never questioned the fact that he should continue doing his duty. What an amazing man (Jedi) he was! :x

"I have failed you Anakin, I have failed you." To me, this is one of the most heart-breaking lines in the whole saga. It's the realization that this young man who Obi-Wan took under his wing as a small boy and nurtured him and taught him has turned into someone who is a total stranger to him. And he blames himself.

It's the same way I felt about my daughter when she was at her worst. What could I have done different? Probably nothing. Same with Obi-Wan. There wasn't anything he could have done differently that would have made any difference in the outcome.

Thank goodness my child straightened out!

I also say 'wonderful'! I think your blog summed it up very well. I will agree with you- the Episode 3 Obi-wan was far better (not that I didn't like the character in the other episodes. Don't get me wrong!). Obi-wan was, IMO, the epitome of what a Jedi Knight should be. I, too, felt heart-broken during the Mustafar scene as the battle between Anakin and Obi-wan came to an end. It was very sad indeed how it took that moment to express his feelings toward Anakin. Nice job, Granny-wan!

That took so much courage on Obi's part. Imagine his fears, taking it upon himself to teach the man that he believed was THE last hope of the Jedi.

g-w, I hope you don't think I was casting a negative light on Obi-wan with this statement. I just meant I do not look at him through rose-colored glasses.

For all the guff OBW has had to endure, I think he did a great job trying to help Anakin become a Jedi. Would Qui-gon have been a better Master for Anakin? Maybe, given Anakin's temperament. But let's face it, OBW had to make sure Anakin learned a lot in a short period of time. The two shared a strong bond, and Anakin threw it away.

Nicely written, Granny. A fitting tribute to a truly great character.

"Character" is such an ironic word to use - not only was he a "character" in the fictional sense, but his personal "character" is also one of devine note. As you mention, he was always doing what hel felt was "right", even though his emotions may have wanted him to go another direction. It is indeed a difficult thing for any of us to do, and he does it with such style and grace.

He looks to me like a heartbroken man... but not one without hope.... Yes, in ANH he does indeed. His tattered Jedi robes, his hunched physique - but he knew Luke was the Hope, and that kept him going!! :)

Hey GW!

I couldn't have said it better myself (you know this to be true!)

What a great tribute to our favorite Jedi Master.

One of my favorite lines in the whole saga is when Anakin & Obi Wan are arguing over whose senses are better "in tune" with what's going on in Padme's sleeping quarters.

Anakin asks aloud whether Obi Wan is as "in tune" as he is.

Obi Wan's brilliant, confident, humble & yes -- snarky, answer:

"Possibly."

Brilliant!
