 | THE PREQUELS THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN |
Recently, I acquired a story treatise of " Episode III: The Fall of the Republic" by John L. Flynn, written in 1983. I shared this treasure with a few friends, and ewanandhaydenfan5 found John L. Flynn's website and pointed it out to me.
Here I discovered this article: Looking Back to the Future of Star Wars" , an outline of Episodes I, II and III. The Clone Wars, The Seduction of Anakin Skywalker, and The Fall of the Republic.
UPDATE: The link to Flynn's article no longer works, but you can see it HERE
NOTE: I'm not sure it's clear that these are George Lucas's ideas from his original development of his story. Flynn is merely putting them down on paper, in an article written in 1994.
It's an awesome story line, and I think I would have preferred the sequels that way... I might have been more of an Anakin fan if I could have looked up on him as man that tried to be good, but made too many mistakes in his life.
In the prequels the way they were made, I think George wanted us to feel compassion towards Anakin, but it didn't work for me... I wanted to slap him silly and tell him to grow up and act like a Jedi, or at least like a man. The ploy for sympathy was overdone.
I like the fate of Anakin's wife in this version much better than that of Padme, whom we knew to be a tough, strong woman, simply losing the will to live because Anakin didn't love her anymore... With two babies to take care of? I don't think so... Where was that sense of duty she had in AOTC?
I'm sure I was not the only person to be disappointed by TPM, at the time I thought it was a movie that George made just because he could... and that it some of the action seemed "forced" (no pun intended).
And I've already confessed to Hansgirl3, who sat next to me during the C-IV movie marathon, that I didn't see AOTC on the big screen... not because I didn't want to, but other things were more important at the time, and I didn't get around to it.
It wasn't until I read the novel of ROTS in March 2005, that I went back and watched both TPM and AOTC several times and appreciated them for what they were... exposition to the big finale. By the time ROTS was released, there was nothing that would have kept me from seeing it in the best theatre in town right away!
My wildest dream would have been for George to give me his storyline and let me write the script, and I would have loved to lean over his shoulder during the editing of ROTS...
All this is not to say that I don't love the movies, ALL of the movies... I do... the prequels just didn't turn out to be what I envisioned back in the 1970s and 1980s...
Of course, I never envisioned Greedo shooting first, either...

strong woman, simply losing the will to live
I loved Anakin's character, I felt a great deal of sympathy for him, but I hated Padme losing the will to live. I'll have to add your link to my ever increasing pile of must-read material. Thanks.

I can't be bothered to look at that website, but just the titles alone inspire me more than the actual prequels have. But then, Anakin Skywalker and the Blustery Day, The Sith Pooh and Tigger Too, and The Republic and The Hunny Tree, all excite me a million more times than the prequels have.
I think Tigger would have made a much better Anakin than Hayden as well.

Wow, Granny! I've read through some of your link stuff and hope to get back to read it all very soon. I have heard through this site's grapevine some of the plotlines that I read on John L. Flynn's website, but I never knew exactly where they came from...whether they were conjecture, speculation, wishful thinking, whatever. Interesting stuff.
For the most part, though, I have to say that the way GL ultimately handled most of the plotlines (most!) works for me, moreso than it would have had the prequels been exactly as that website mentions. This could,of course, simply be a case of my following like a sheep to slaughter for the love of a saga that's been with me for so long.
Great stuff, granny!

Wow - sounds like those bits of reading material would be very interesting! I wouldn't mind adding those to my list as well - someday, perhaps!
I dunno - I still think Da Maker is a genius, and he had a purpose for doing the things he did. I don't necessarily agree with the idea of Padme just "giving up" either. As Mace would say: " It's not in her character," but I can understand why it was a "necessary evil" for the storyline and its continuity.

There are a million "what ifs" that we could all (and do) ponder about the GFFA. I still love Anakin's character. Is he a bit whiny? Yes. Is he a bit over-the-top at times? Yes. But, as was mentioned by someone in Star Wars: The Legacy Revelaed on The History Channel, who better to become an ultra-villian than a "whiny Emo kid with issues"?! LOL!! (I just crack up every time I think of that...and it's true!!)
I could just see you leaning over GL' shoulder...correcting every typo and grammar error along the way... Priceless!

I once remember reading something to the effect that if you want to understand an author that you should read/see everything they ever did and then everything they ever read or watched, and then maybe you could hope to catch a glimpse of the motivations behind it all. I would say that the script choices say more about GL than the characters themselves...perhaps.

More important??? Where are your priorities?
He he, just kidding, Granny. I suppose you had your reasons.
As I said before, John Flynn's script was, in general, more like the way I pictured the prequels would be. I liked Lady Arcadia's character , she wasn't as passive as Padme seemed in ROTS, (even though Padme was really not a passive character) and I always pictured Luke & Leia's mom living with Leia on Alderaan for a short time.
I still like how GL orchestrated Anakin's fall, better than in John's script. Anakin's fear of losing someone he loves is very relatable.

g-w, what a great tale Flynn weaved. I would never venture to tell GL he should have done this, should have done that. He told the story he wanted to tell. (I suppose, being a writer myself, I understand this way of thinking.) I am a SW fan, and I appreciate all the hard work the cardre of artists and technicians poured into this tale.
I will admit I really like Flynn's ending, especially the fact that Lady Arcadia (Padme) escapes. I never could see her giving up the will to live when she had not one, but two beautiful children for whom to live. And her death never really jived with the conversation between Luke and Leia on Endor. "Leia, do you remember your mother? . . ." Hey, but that's just me.

I don't care for it. I'm sorry but first of all it didn't make sense for Lady Arcadia to escape . . . only to keep one child and give up the other. I don't care for the idea of Anakin's downfall occurring in the second film and focusing the third film on the Jedi and the Republic's downfall. I don't like it. Sorry. I get tired of these people believing they could have done the Prequel Trilogy better than Lucas, because it didn't jibe with their preconceptions. And in the end, their ideas end up inferior to Lucas'. And the idea of focusing the third film solely on the Jedi's downfall is rushed, boring and not very good. Thank God this Flynn never filmed the PT. That's all I can say.

I know how you feel, if George made it, it's the way it should be...

Oh yes, I was ROFL at that one... but then, you have to think of his as a VILLIAN! He was too cute when he was nine... LOL

I was thinking more along the lines of, "George, the fans will hate that...." LOL

Long and not very interesting story involving the family, traveling and gunshot wounds.... LOL
John Flynn's script was, in general, more like the way I pictured the prequels would be. I liked Lady Arcadia's character , she wasn't as passive as Padme seemed in ROTS
I always pictured her in hiding somewhere, and perhaps even still living even though Leia thinks she's dead...

I would never venture to tell GL he should have done this, should have done that. He told the story he wanted to tell.
I think his vision changed over the years... new and different ideas, influenced by the EU perhaps? And he himself has said that he became more fascinated with Vader and swtiched his emphasis to him...

Sorry. I get tired of these people believing they could have done the Prequel Trilogy better than Lucas, because it didn't jibe with their preconceptions
Keep in mind that Flynn wrote his story FOR George, and long before the prequels were made. So it isn't a case of hindsight.
I think everyone had their ideas of what the saga should have been like after seeing the OT. The EU is not exactly my idea of what should have happened in the future.
Does it match with George's idea? We may never know!

Oddly enough, I never really dwelled on how the prequels might play out, maybe because I never thought there would be any prequels. I see merits in both the Flynn script and the final GL version.... probably preferring the GL version, though.
I love the prequels as is.... even TPM, which I thought was pretty weak when it first came out. Repeated viewing has made my heart grow fonder. As far as Padme being too passive in ROTS, I dunno... she was in a very different place emotionally, being pregnant and all. I, too, didn't buy the "I gave up the will to live" scenario... although despair can drive you to do some unlikely things...
Nice entry, Granny!

I will definitely add this to my must read list I do not have the time right now since I am getting ready to head off to work
From what you and others have said, I could not agree more with how I envisioned Padme's fate. That is the one part of the PT that I cannot understand...but I can also see why it was done the way it was.
Looking forward to reading your find!!

Granny!
simply losing the will to live because Anakin didn't love her anymore... I don't think it was so much he didn't love her anymore, but that he loved her TOO MUCH
I see what you're saying, though. My ex turned to the dark side while I was pregnant (see, art does imitate life!), and I knew I had to make it for the baby's sake. She had to have one parent she could count on! Ooh, that was harsh, wasn't it?

From what you and others have said, I could not agree more with how I envisioned Padme's fate.
Her dying that way was jest weak... and using her as his reason for turning to the dark side was weak... of course, there were a lot of deleted scenes that would have added some more sense to that...
Ooh, that was harsh, wasn't it?
Not if it's true!

I'm not sure it's completely clear that these were GEORGE'S ideas back in the 70s. Flynn wrote the article in 1994, drawing on George's material.
I wonder where, when and why it all changed so much for George... always in motion is the furture, and George's imagination...

Hmm. My browser at work blocks the site. Must read it later. I have to say I was disappointed by the prequels and prefer the version of events that formed in my head while watching the original film as a four year old. With substantial tweeaking, obviously.
Will read those tomorrow and see what's what.

I remember imagining the prequels...I have everything planned out! I knew how it was all going to happen. Haha! Luckily, I made a conscious effort to throw out those ideas when GL started talking about making TPM. If I hadn't, I think I would have been miserable in the theatre watching those films. Except for a few things (like Padme's death), ROTS blew me away...so I'm glad I let ol' Georgie take control. Yeah, I have my complaints about the others, but I'm getting better about it...
Anyway, my point is...I definitely have to read that Flynn version! I'm completely intrigued!

When I first read the 3 other prequels that you wrote (The Clone Wars, The Seduction of Anakin Skywalker, and The Fall of the Republic) it sounded more intriguing. The more I thought about it, however, TPM was necessary for plot closure.
AOTC was also necessary for plot closure. First, Luke mentioned the Clone Wars in ANH. Second, we know Anakin & Padme got together.

More profound is extending The Seduction of Anakin Skywalker but I realize now that his fall is virtually tied directly to The Fall of the Republic. Also, one can look at ROTS as being synonymous with the The Fall of the Republic.
Finally, the drawback to sequels/prequels is that one is no longer starting with a blank piece of paper, as in ANH. What was only one sentence allusions require extensive screen time to due it justice, e.g., the duel on Mustafar, training of Darth Vader, the rise of Palpatine and the development and implementation of Clones in War.

I think Revenge of the Sith, if we view this objectively, really was the greatest of all of the films, in terms of depth and construction. However, all of the films complement one another to formulate one commanding saga of duty, honor, brotherhood, and love, and each is powerful amd unique.
