This has been discussed and debated about so many times. It is among the most controversial scenes in the entire Star Wars saga. There are a multitude of arguments about this one scene, and so I'm going to try my hand at shedding some light on the subject of the duel between Mace Windu and Darth Sidious.
Mace Windu, Jedi Master, one of the most powerful members of the entire Jedi Council, learns something that shocks him to the core. Anakin Skywalker, the Chosen One, the Jedi who, it was prophesied, would bring balance to the Force, informs Windu that Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, president of the Galactic Republic, is in fact Darth Sidious, the Dark Lord of the Sith who has been destroying the Jedi and the Republic from inside out. Refusing to allow Skywalker to accompany him as he attempts to arrest Palpatine, Windu gathers Jedi Masters Agen Kolar, Saesee Tiin, and Kit Fisto to help him capture the Dark Lord.
The four Jedi Masters step into the Chancellor's office. Seated at his desk, sillhouetted against the backdrop of Coruscant's night sky, the serene and wise old face of Palpatine welcome's the Jedi. Igniting their lightsabers, the Masters announce their intentions to arrest the Chancellor, and immediately see that Sidious is not going to come quietly.
But when Darth Sidious ignites his scarlet Sith lightsaber, the Jedi Masters are completely unprepared for the supernatural speed and strength granted Sidious by the dark side itself. In a split-second, the Sith Lord has struck down Agen Kolar, and before Saesee Tiin can react, he too his been destroyed by the impossibly quick Sith.
An instant later, Sidious has both Kit Fisto and Mace Windu off balance. Fisto, however, powerful master though he is, simply can't keep up with the lightning-fast Sith, and is struck dead. Then, it's only Windu and Sidious left.
Kolar, Tiin, and Fisto were already dead before the fight began. Darth Sidious was faster than them and took them all by surprise with his ferocity, aggression, and sheer skill. Sidious was the most powerful Sith of modern times, and Kolar, Tiin, and Fisto, Jedi Masters though they were, were, I'm afraid to say, only slightly above average, as far as Jedi Masters go. Don't get me wrong: the Jedi Masters were the elite within the Order, but Jedi Master and Sith Lord seem to be on the same level, and a lot of people have called Darth Sidious the "Yoda" of the Sith. I hope I didn't offend anyone with this. These particular three Jedi are some of my favorites in the entire Star Wars mythos, and I was certainly shocked and sad to see them all die. I would certainly have liked to have seen them survive longer, but what I'm trying to say here is that I still thought that their deaths were believable and effective. On a related note, I intend to write about the Order Sixty-Six deaths in a few days.
Meanwhile, the Chosen One realizes that he's just sent four of the most powerful Jedi in history to destroy the one person who can save the woman he loves. At least, that's what he thinks.
I didn't intend for this entry to be this long, and it's getting late, so I'm gonna continue this topic tomorrow. Hopefully you're not bored to death by these little narratives of mine, or you haven't given up on me for the interval between this and my last entry. I ordered something that will be the topic for a series of blog entries and I've been waiting it to arrive. It got here a couple of days ago so I'll try to go back to a blog a day, which was my original intent. Well, tomorrow I'll try to get into the meat of the topic, so bear with me...
