Claws of the Dragon goodness
Warning! If you haven't read the latest issue (#18) of the Legacy comic series, beware of major spoilers in this entry.

The issue number 18 of the Legacy comic series is the prime example of reward for heavy reader of the EU.

In this part 5 of 6 of the Claws of the Dragon story arc, we discover the reasons behind the final transformation of A'Sharad Hett in Darth Krayt. It involves the Vongs and a little strange character named Vergere.

In only three to four pages, the master writer John Ostrander deliver an amazing flashback, tying together prequel story points, NOJ story elements and the recent Legacy of the Force books, mainly thanks to the use of Vergere.

First, the journey of A'Sharad Hett toward the dark side now makes sense in more ways than I thought they will.

Second, the two Legacy series (the book one and the comics) have now more links between them. The name of Darth Caedus is mentioned and we are now aware that Hett was the first to undergo the "treatment" Vergere used on Jacen during the NOJ. But this attempt was a failure, mainly because Hett was already trained to certain Sith techniques.

I'm really intrigue by the character of Vergere. She proclaims to have been trained by Darth Sidious but yet she was still a Jedi in mission when she was captured by the Vongs. I wonder if we will have the full backstory of her character someday.

One thing for sure, according to Krayt, the Darth Caedus (written falsely Cadeus in the issue) we know see in the Legacy of the Force series was the creation of Vergere. So the Jacen I once loved as a character is dead in Traitor. This shouldn't be a surprise, but it is at least a confirmation for me.

And if wasn't enough, the current story with Cade moves along as well. The rebel-in-every-situation Skywalker isn't playing the game of Krayt anymore. Just before a battle between him and the other Sith starts, Cade sees the ghost spirit form of his father for the first time. Sadly, even after the warning of his father, the anger and the Sith eyes come during the battle.

I don't know how all this situation will be resolve, but a big twist is promised to us. I fear for Cade's mother because she is coming to the rescue of his son and her potential death could be used as a plot device to shape the future of Cade.

Anyway, it was an excellent issue of one of the best Star Wars comic series of the moment. I haven't talk about the art much, but it is also very good. I'm definitively a fan of Jan Duursema style. She's done a particularly good job on the interior of the Vong's ship.

I can't recommend this comic series highly enough. The future of the Star Wars universe is in real good hands. I can't wait for the final issue of the arc.

Wow, I really have to go pick that issue up now. I was thinking I'd probably hold off until TPB, but that sounds amazing! I love it when all those disparate elements of the EU are woven together so well.

So, It really was Vergere. I'm just reading traitor now but I have known the course of the entire saga all along. I really like her gardener thing. She is strange though. I'll give you that.

Wow - i've got to source a copy of this - sounds amazing - I'm glad the comics have woven Vergere into the narrative well - makes her machinations of Jacen Solo seem more realistic since the authors decided she was Sith - guessing from Krayts mention of Caedus that we shouldnt excpect jacen (or his recent incarnation at least) to survive the current arc.

Exciting stuff looks like 2008 will be a great year for the EU
