Four or five years ago I had the pleasure of seeing a movie called Wet Hot American Summer.
I had never heard of it, and neither had my wife. One of our friends told us about it and said it was one of the funniest movies she had ever seen.
And after watching it, I have to agree. Rivaled in its originality only by Napolean Dynamite, the comedy in this movie is refreshingly original, witty, and well....quite vulgar.
*Warning: This movie is rated R, so consult your parents before watching*
There is no nudity, however it is "rated R for strong sexual content, language and a drug sequence."
It takes place in 1982 and is about the last day of camp. The main characters are a group of camp councelors with supporting roles by the camp kids. For anyone who is old enough to remember MTV's "The State", you'll recognize the same humor (see also: Comedy Central's Reno 911) as you see some of The State's cast return with MICHAEL SHOWALTER, KEN MARINO, and MICHAEL IAN BLACK .
It also stars SNL vets like JANEANE GAROFALO, MOLLY SHANNON, and AMY POEHLER.
Other cast members include DAVID HYDE PIERCE, Law and Order's CHRISTOPHER MELONI, MARGUERITE MOREAU, and Friend's PAUL RUDD.
Essentially, the movie is about Showalter's character coop trying to win over Moreau's character Katie while her obnoxious boyfriend Andy (played by Rudd) is off busy trying to score with other chicks. Meanwhile, Garofalo (Beth) meets a local physicist Henry (Pierce) and they hit it off as well.
Each character has their own developing stories, and they all play out little by little as the last day of camp winds down.
Sometimes you can catch it on Comedy Central, but the editing on TV doesn't do this film justice.
Watch it. It is hilarious.
