 | A Still Moment in a Galaxy Far, Far Away |
What was she thinking in this still moment from our beloved galaxy?
As the teenage queen, Amidala, watched the Trade Federation troops land on her beautiful world of Naboo and begin taking over the streets, what was going through her mind?
Was she truly prepared to handle such an invasion and test of her strength as a ruler at this juncture?
Had she handled relations with the Neimoidians as she should have?
Should she plea to the Galactic Senate for assistance in the matter and, if so, go to Coruscant in person?
What was to become of her world, its people and the well-being of the economic structure that her home had built for itself?
These could easily have been some of the questions infecting her mind during this crisis that was plaguing her planet. These were most certainly times of immense difficulty for any ruler, let alone a young 14-year old queen.
I can not imagine attempting to make such decisions and relations at so young an age. This would test Amidala's mettle more than any situation she had previously faced as queen. Her people were depending upon her to keep them and their way of living secure in the face of adversity. What a daunting task to be laid on one so young.
Look at the lighting used to capture her thoughts and pain. Perfect.
Amidala, however, was no normal teenager. She had been preparing for conflicts such as this for most of her short life. She knew what needed to be done and how to accomplish it.
She knew, above all, that she could not back down in her stance with the Federation. She must command respect and place thoughts of uncertainty in her enemy. She had already begun doing so by the strength she displayed in her holographic communications with the Neimoidians earlier.
Had she foreseen that the droid army would begin descending upon Naboo so quickly after the brief discussion with the Federation leaders in which she declared so fiercely that she would not back down? Would she be able to convince the Senate to act quickly enough to avoid the war that she was so against?
She knew that she must hide any doubts that she had within the mask that she wore; a mask of strength and wisdom. One that would carry her through the difficult times she faced. She was the Queen of Naboo. She would prevail against adversity and ensure peace and triumph for her people and planet.
I think this was an important moment for Amidala. Here the teenage queen has the weight of the world (literally!) on her shoulders and all of her people are depending on her. It's so poignant seeing her standing her so quietly and incredibly calm as events unfold beyond her direct control. It's an amazingly touching moment to me.
I believe her thoughts concerned the well-being of her people over most other matters. She was a ruler with great heart and caring. She knew that to handle matters most effectively, she must make the journey to seek audience with the Senate personally. No envoy could be sent for this task. Her plea for assistance must be made by her and her alone.
And so it was...

It's a beautiful shot. She looks so elegant, even at her young age. But you can clearly see the burden she carries.
And so it was...
Nicely written, HG.

What great imagery when you think about it...the elegant costumes required literally weighed down the young queen of Naboo, symbolically demonstrating the weight of responsibility she bore. Yet Padme looks elegant and calm and oh-so-beautiful in that still.
Amazing.

what was going through her mind?
Why during my reign? After thousands of years of peace, why NOW?
It's so poignant seeing her standing her so quietly and incredibly calm as events unfold beyond her direct control. It's an amazingly touching moment to me.
This is the moment where we realize that she may be 14, but she's the QUEEN, and thus must deal with all this poodoo, like it or not... very, very poignant....

Wonderful point about the seriousness of this shot. SW has several great "looking out upon things" shots, and they're all weighty and important and fascinating. The saga often speaks most loudly when it's saying nothing at all... when the words are in our heart, not our minds.
Also, I believe her exact thoughts were "How am I supposed to walk around in this? It's freaking plugged into the wall!"

Wonderful entry HG! I think you really captured the serenity and torture of that scene, and yes, the costume does help to 'weigh her down'
Look at the lighting used to capture her thoughts and pain. Perfect.
Exquisite, IMHO

Beautiful!
I've always loved this particular scene - you know she's "weighted" down so much, yet she remains so poised and -ultimately - in control.
She knew that she must hide any doubts that she had within the mask that she wore; a mask of strength and wisdom Ahhh...the "mask" analogy! Yes, indeed...it's also interesting that the Naboo royal makeup: "tears of remeberance", etc., DO give Padme a bit of a mask to actually hide behind as "Queen," while inside she is reeling with emotion and ponderous thought.
Great job, HG3!

a mask of strength and wisdom
It wasn't very long ago that I read an entry pertaining to another mask, and, probably because of the proximity of time, this simple statement means more to me than it might otherwise. It just jumped out at me, hg.
Padmé wears a mask, and, eventually, so does Anakin. There are times in both their lives they are unable, for very different reasons, to show their true selves. She wears her mask to impart strength for the good of her people; he to impart strength in order to cause a galaxy to cower in fear.

Wow, what a thought provoking and deep blog, my Clone.
Why during my reign? After thousands of years of peace, why NOW?
Actually, I think was was going through her head was..."Oh crap, I'm 14 years old. Now what the hell am I suppose to do?"
As the teenage queen, Amidala, watched the Trade Federation troops land on her beautiful world of Naboo and begin taking over the streets, what was going through her mind?

I've never realized the significance of the lighting. When I get home I have to pop in TPM.

Very nice entry!!!

Wonderful job HG!!
I know how you feel about the PT . but you truly did this scene justice . Although this is not one of my favorite gowns, she does look very regal in it...even in the face of an impending battle. She may have been young, but she knew what needed to be done...even if that was a frightening thought.

Yes, JP, it's really written all over her painted face.

I completely agree, Ami. Excellent point!!
Why during my reign? After thousands of years of peace, why NOW?
LMAO, Granny!
SW has several great "looking out upon things" shots, and they're all weighty and important and fascinating
So true, Stooge. I wonder if GL did that on purpose so we could think deeply about what was going through the character's thoughts...

Why thank you, Nob. Of course, John Williams music did it justice as well!
the "mask" analogy! Yes, indeed...it's also interesting that the Naboo royal makeup: "tears of remeberance", etc.,
It really is amazing how the mask is woven into so much of the saga. Truly wonderful!

Lighting can play a tremendous part in how we view a particular scene, Lily!! I'm glad I'm tempting you to watch it again.
Although this is not one of my favorite gowns, she does look very regal in it...
I agree, PS77. She brought the regal tones into things perfectly, IMO!!

Yes, this scene was beautifully lit... the costuming was perfect and the slight down turn of Amidala's head... all small things that could be easily taken for granted, but are crucially important to how her role plays out in the Saga.
Nice job!

I can't even imagine trying to do that NOW!! Creepy! And most of the 14 year old girls I know....well let's just say that the world would certainly be an intersesting place..... * screams, sirens, explosions...or, alternately, endless pink, pathetic boy bands, and airhead rulers saying nothing but "oh my gosh" and "shut up"* And that's all I'm gonna say.....
She knew that she must hide any doubts that she had within the mask that she wore; a mask of strength and wisdom
Wow!! Great thought!
Wonderful entry, Hansgirl!

Nice observation about the lighting. That's GL at his finest...the non-verbal elements really speak volumes.
Amidala, however, was no normal teenager
How true. Even though she was first involved in politics from a very young age, an invasion like that could have been a heavy strain on even a seasoned politician. She was very wise for her age.
Wonderful job!

You are right -- perfect! And. . .I find it ironic that you use this word, as I can hear the young queen muttering it herself! "puh-fect"
Your writing is most eloquent and you capture the still moment beautifully. You really an see the weight or her world on her shoulders, can't you?

Look at the lighting used to capture her thoughts and pain. Perfect.
Gazing at this "still moment" I can't help but hear a faint whisper off somewhere in the "not so far" distant future. An ill and chilling voice of sinister evil, lurking about in the depths of the bleak darkness that will eventually shroud their beloved Democracy... " You're far too trusting." Yes, a HUGE caring heart, that would ultimately be passed down to her " safely anonymous, daughter"
Talk about "staying on target" Yay!
Loved it, darling

better late than never my friend, Im still catching up on these blogs!
nice work....the average teens biggest worry at that age is what to do after school, what clothes to wear and what cute boy may or may NOT like them....can you imagine letting TEENAGERS run the REAL world? I think not!
still, perhaps they had the right idea on Naboo...youth is, by its nature, optimistic in most cases, and it was Amidala's persistant HOPE that this conflict could eventually be resolved and her world saved that did in deed save it.
I suppose thats also why she was so BLINDED by Anakins darkside; all SHE saw was the positive in him and overlooked his flaws...ah, young love LOL.
great blog!
