Regions
The entire galaxy is divided up into regions. These are the largest divisional groupings of the galaxy. They include: the Deep Core, the Core, the Colonies, the Inner Rim, the Expansion Region, the Outer Rim, the Unknown regions and Wild Space.

Sectors
A sector is a group or cluster of star systems united for economic and political reasons. They can be composed of anywhere from 50 to 1000s of systems.

Systems
Systems refer to individual stars and their orbiting planets. So the solar system in which we live is a system, not a sector. Earth is a planet within that system.

Heading
My internal method for tracking planets on the map. It's the direction from Coruscant where a planet can be found, assuming that Tatooine is always at a 180 degree heading from Coruscant. Headings are rounded to the nearest 45 degree.

Yavin 4: Outer Rim 090
Kashyyyk: Mid Rim 135
Naboo: Mid Rim 180
Geonosis: Outer Rim 180
Kamino: Wild Space 180
Bespin, Hoth, Endor, Utapau, Mustafar: Outer Rim 225

Wild Space
The galaxy's true frontier, Wild Space is the area once considered part of the Unknown Regions which was opened to exploration and settlement as one of the Emperor's last acts. Grand Admiral Thrawn was charged with taming this wilderness, and he declared it part of the Empire. On the maps included with the New Jedi Order novels, Wild Space is on the edge of the Rim of the known galaxy and is marked by sparkles.

Corporate Sector
The Corporate Sector is a free-enterprise fiefdom consisting of tens of thousands of star systems, it is run by a single wealthy and influential company, the Corporate Sector Authority (CSA). It was introduced in the Han Solo Adventures trilogy by Brian Daley

Placing New Planets
If an author's description of a new planet (sometimes described only in unpublished internal notes or outlines) does not reveal its general location on the map, the planet will usually not be placed right away. If and when it is decided to place the planet on the map (often because an author or editor has requested it, say, for a new version of a map), we will take into consideration as many continuity factors as possible:

Would it be close to a trade route?
How far from the Core would it be?
Is it alligned with any political faction?
What species are seen on the planet?

And yes, sometimes remote planets will be placed at a cartographer's discretion because there's a blank spot on the map where it sensibly fits.

And finally, I'd like to thank everyone who has participated in the discussions going on in the Galaxy Map thread. Your comments to this thread have made a tremendous impact in helping us make the galaxy maps better and better.

You've done an exceptional job with such a monumental task.

It's definitely a team effort. For most maps, I usually try to consult with Dan Wallace and Jason Fry. Jason also helped by providing me with his comprehensive planet's database which I incorporated into the Holocron. I also understand that at times Dan and/or Jason have had direct contact with some of the other folks on the galaxy thread.

I think you mean Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords... :)

But thanks for the update. I always love it when books include maps, especially when it's as detailed and well thought-out as one in a SW book. I'm especially looking forward to the new maps in the Visual Guide and the New Essential Chronology.

(I'd even go so far as to say we could all use an Essential Guide to SW Cartography...)

With regard to Wild Space, there's something I'm confused about: if that's the area Thrawn was off conquering all that time, why is it on the opposite side of the galaxy from Nirauan?

See the sparkly parts of the NJO maps for the areas considered Wild Space. It's on every outer edge of the Outer Rim. Opposite of Nirauan is just where the Region label happened to be placed on the map.

Is there any known location for the Skustell Cluster?

Ok, tasty taste, i'm down on my knees begging. Can you create a program "Star Wars Galaxy" that functions like Google Earth, allowing users to view the galaxy at different distances and angles, and also observe political and other overlays? Can you bribe someone else to?

As cool as an interactive galaxy map would be, I don't know of any such thing in the works. You'd have to talk to the starwars.com folks about something like that.

No known location for the Skustell Cluster or even any details as to what exactly the Skustell Cluster is.

how could i get into contact with people who could do this? do you have a comprehesive map (most of the published ones have [deliberate?] ommissions) that could be used to place every planet?

Thanks. I emailed them.

On another note, do you know if the planet Haarun Kal has been placed?

Ok, I'm diggin' up bones here by posting to this blog, but I wanted to see what was possible..

You posted a point of contact for sw.com type of inquiries. I'd like to know if there's a way to petition for the 'recording' of a planetary location. Is there a team that this can be submitted to, or is this solely done by authors and/or LFL?

Before you think I'm a loon, the planet I would like to see placed already exists in the SW universe, AND I'm not asking for new maps to be published, just noted for future use.

Kamparas, former Jedi Training Center.

And yes, I have a location that I'd like to suggest if there is a forum for such a request.

Thanks for a moment of your time...

Planets are only placed on an as needed basis. Sometimes I'll solicit advise for placement in the Galaxy Map thread.

Very good points to consider, especially as I do a lot of writing for the RPG game I run.
