Movie Characters killed in the EU
Ever wonder what ultimately happened to your favorite characters? The Expanded Universe has revealed the fates of many characters whose deaths weren't shown onscreen.

Warning! Some of those listed below are spoilers from recently released sources.

Early-EU "near-deaths"
Some of the early intended deaths in the EU were later negated by appearances in later EU sources.

General Dodonna [Goodwin/Williamson comics]
Apparently killed while sacrificing himself to slow the Imperial counterattack on the Rebel base on Yavin 4, we learn later that Dodonna survived and was taken prisoner until the liberation of Coruscant.

Janson [Marvel comics]
Janson appeared to have died during the evacuation of Hoth after his and Wedge's escape craft is shot down. In the Rogue Squadron books and comics, he's alive and well. It has since been stated that the death on Hoth story is just a legend that is told to new Rogue Squadron recruits.

Hobbie and General Veers [ESB novelization]
In the novelization, Hobbie stops the assault of the lead Imperial walker by crashing his snowspeeder into AT-AT's head, killing Veers in the process. Hobbie later appears in the Rogue Squadron books and comics with reference often made to his ability to survive crashes. It was revealed that Veers survived only to die many years later on Balmorra.

Non-Continuity Deaths
Watto[Visionaries]
Watto appears in the Galaxies video game

"Resurrections"
Boba Fett [Marvel Comics, Bounty Hunter Wars #1: The Mandalorian Armor, et al]
Boba Fett climbs out of the Sarlacc in the Marvel comic only to be thrown back in again while inside the hull of a sandcrawler. His real escape is chronicled elsewhere in various other sources.

Palpatine (clone) [Dark Empire comics]
Palpatine's clone dies, his life force enters another clone body, that clone body is killed, and another clone emerges. When that final clone entity attempts to possess the body of the newly born Anakin Solo, it is intercepted by the dying Empatojayos Brand, thus snuffing out the Emperor's will once and for all.

Darth Maul (clone or Sith magic or something) [Tales #9]
A version of Darth Maul is back long enough to have a Maul vs. Vader showdown. Note that Visionaries also had a Maul with a cybernetic lower half that is killed by Owen and Obi-Wan on Tatooine. And in Tales #17, there's a guy preserving Maul's brain.

Bib Fortuna [Tales from Jabba's Palace][Rogue Squadron: Battleground: Tatooine]
His death is not seen in the film, so this technically might not be a resurrection. Bib goes back to Jabba's palace to take over crime operations but he is among those who are subdued in a sudden insurrection by the B'omarr monks. Bib's brain is placed in a jar but he later manages to transfer his brain into the body of Firith Olan.

Grievous [Galaxies video game]
Not a resurrection of the alien entity that makes up Grievous, but a reuse of the Grievous technology.

Palpatine (clone) [Dark Empire comics]
Palpatine's clone dies, his life force enters another clone body, that clone body is killed, and another clone emerges. When that final clone entity attempts to possess the body of the newly born Anakin Skywalker, it is intercepted by the dying Empatojayos Brand, thus snuffing out the Emperor's will once and for all.

I think you mean Anakin Solo but its a nice list.

Hm... Could Dash Rendar be considered a film character now since the Outrider was added briefly to the shot over Mos Eisley in Episode IV Special Edition? :p

The Vader vs. Maul brawl is canon? D'oh! That's just... silly.

The Vader vs. Maul brawl is canon? It's not quite the real Darth Maul. Hence the "or something." Who knows, it could have been a vision like Luke confronting Vader on Dagobah or just some sort of Sith illusion. Or a clone. Nothing's been determined as to what we are actually seeing, just that Vader and Maul have a pretty cool battle.

The Dash Rendar issue is moot because he's not dead yet (see Shadows of the Empire: Evolution and Star Wars Insider #75).

Appo added.

Actually, many consider it one of the best Vader comics. IMHO, its not silly at all.

- Lak Sivrak doesn't die in 'GG ANH'. He died in 'Tales from Mos Eisley Cantina'.

- Koffi Arana dies in 'Purge' and so does Ma'kis'shaalas.

As near as I can tell, the New Essential Chronology does not mention Dodonna's death. Teh New Essential Character Guide mentions it, but gives no date. Is there another place this is mentioned?

There was an originally "Non-continuity death" in the Gameboy Advance game, "New Droid Army", but it has since been ret-conned into something else.

The game ends with Anakin defeating Count Dooku, likely killing him. But this was canonized/ret-conned by Abel Pena in a Fact Files article, which said that Anakin defeated a Force "doppelganger" of Dooku, an idea from the Dark Empire series when Luke appears to Leia from far away. Abel's detailed explanation can be found in this article on the SWFA website.

I've always assumed that the idea of a central character dying undergoes a lot of scrutinty and endures a little behind the scenes controversy. Would you say that's true?

Seems like it would have to go a ways up the chain of command.

Valorum added - I can't believe I missed that one.

Definitely for major characters. Usually much less so for minor characters. I have no idea how these types of things were handled in the early years.

As stated above, EV9D9 was killed circa 4ABY, during RotJ.

The Gotal from the Cantina dies the day after he is seen.

J'Quill and Tessek are disembodied in Tales From Jabba's Palace

No specifics are given for Jerriko, but he is described as "hunted"

Dr. Evazan doesn't die, its Ponda Baba, his Aqualish lackey takes the fall.

Sompeetalay said "- Lak Sivrak doesn't die in 'GG ANH'. He died in 'Tales from Mos Eisley Cantina'.", which is true, but if memory serves... I believe he aided the rebels on Hoth, and that was his actual place of death.

The Dark Empire Comic Trilogy is considered EU continuity. As a result, I'm puzzled why you list the Clone Emperor's death under "Non-continuity", since you refer to Dark Empire with reference to General Dodonna's "near-death". Author Michael Stackpole included Dodnna in the X-Wing novels The Krytos Trap and Isard's Revenge to explain the apparent discrepency between the Goodwin/Williamson comics and Dark Empire.

The only non-continuity death listed here is Watto's. "Resurrections" under this list are in-continuity.

So the resurrection of Maul in Visionaries is canonical?

Is Tag and Bink canonical?

So how exactly is the Resurrection story from Tales #9 considered canonical when it is clearly printed with the infinities logo accompanying it? It was printed in the tales #9, the tales Volume #3, and the Star Wars - The Comics Companion as an infinities tales. How exactly has this changed?
