During the course of making a film, there are changes to characters made late in production after licensed products have gone to print/production. At other times, there is straight up confusion over characters that look similar but are supposed to be different; which increasingly becomes the case when alien masks and costumes or digital assets are repurposed or when characters are recast. As a result, there are several cases of mistaken identities in the
Star Wars lore. These "errors" have been around as early as the first Marvel comic adaptation that showed Jabba the Hutt as a follically-challenged bipedal alien. Unfortunately, these changes aren't limited to the Classic trilogy. Some fans might notice that the new
Complete Visual Dictionary from DK features corrections to previous versions of the
Visual Dictionary series. To celebrate the release of the
CVD, here's a list of some of the more notable cases of mistaken identity in the
Star Wars EU:
Jabba the Hutt (aka Jabba the Hut [sic], Mosep, Heater)
The Marvel comics adaptation depicted Jabba's confrontation with Han with the "Mingo" costume, a character who was later given the EU name Mosep. Heater, a character from the radio drama, was depicted in artwork for the RPG based on images of Declan Mullholland playing the Jabba stand-in for the deleted scenes in Ep IV. The final look of Jabba as a slug did not come out until Ep VI.
Zuckuss/4-LOM
Kenner toys reversed the names of the Gand bounty hunter Zuckuss and the droid bounty hunter 4-LOM action figures when they first came out. To complicate matters even further, the Marvel comics referred to Dengar as Zuckass. The error was corrected in sources released after 1989, including the Hasbro action figures.
Barada/Kithaba
Here's the gist. In
Return of the Jedi, there are two Klatooinians seen on the skiffs during the battle at the Sarlacc. Klatooinian #1 (wearing a red headband and yellow shirt) is on the skiff carrying Luke and the others. He is the first victim to fall in the Sarlacc (though there's a shot in the film where we see him dragged into the maw by the Sarlacc's tentacle later on) . Klatooinian #2 (wearing an orange head band and white shirt) is on the second skiff which Luke later jumps to and proceeds to wipe out all the guards. The name "Barada" was listed in the
RJ novel as the one on Luke's skiff who falls first. The Barada vintage action figure from the 80's had the paint job of K#1 although the image on the packaging showed K#2. The Decipher card game gave the name "Kithaba" as the tillerman aboard Luke's skiff. When Barada was released as part of the 3-pack of Jabba's skiff guards in the 90's, they used paint job of K#2 with the name "Barada". The databank shows K#1 for the movie image of Barada, and K#2 for the EU image. K#1 is Kithaba and K#2 is Barada.
Bail Organa/Bail Antilles
Adrian Dunbar was originally cast for the role of Bail Organa in Episode I. During production, references to Bail Organa in the script were changed to Bail Antilles, though some sources had already gone to print identifying the Dunbar character as Organa. Jimmy Smits was not cast as Bail Organa until production on Episode II was underway.
Depa Billaba/Sarr Labooda, Eeth Koth/Agen Kolar, Adi Gallia/Stass Allie
Since
Attack of the Clones was shot in Sydney, Australia, the pool of Jedi extras was different than the one used to fill the ranks of the Jedi Council in Leavesden, England during the shooting of
The Phantom Menace. As a result, some of the named Jedi roles were played by different people. Characters who looked significantly different from their
TPM counterparts were given new names and treated as separate (but sometimes related) characters.
Seboca/Rednax/Manoca (Dex's Diner Dugs)
Early character sheets used during production showed concept visuals of three Dugs in the film named Seboca, Manoca, and Rednax. The Seboca and Manoca CG models (wearing a red outfit) were essentially the same aside from the fact that the hair of Manoca was slicked back while Seboca's is a bit more frazzled. Seboca has since been identified as being in both the airspeeder chase and in Dex's Diner, leaving no place for Manoca. Rednax is the Dug in the diner with his spotted neck to the camera behind Obi-Wan. His outfit is dark gray.
Tundra Dowmeia/Tikkes
Tundra Dowmeia is a loyal Republic Senator while Tikkes is a Separatist. Confusion arises due to the fact that in both
AOTC and
ROTS, they are seen dressed the same.
Rune Haako in AOTC (aka Gilramos Libkath)
Early production notes simply referred to this character as "Nute's Aide." At one point, the "Nute Aide" was given the name "Gilramos Libkath" which was used in the
Attack of the Clones Visual Dictionary. The published version of the
AOTC script attributed the dialgoue lines to Rune Haako and the
CVD was changed to reflect that this character is indeed Rune Haako. Note that the Neimoidian mask used in filming and the voice are different than those used for Rune in
TPM.
Sweitt Concorkill/Pablo-Jill/Coleman Kcaj
Pablo-Jill was the Ongree Jedi who appears in
AOTC. For
Revenge of the Sith a new Ongree Jedi CG model was created and given the name Coleman Kcaj. The name Sweitt Concorkill was listed as a Senator in early versions of the
ROTS script and internal notes. Sweitt Concorkill was originally going to be an Ongree Senator, until he was changed to a Vurk. As a result of these changes, this character has been mislabeled in several early sources, including the
ROTS Visual Dictionary which showed an Ongree in Jedi robes for Sweitt. The
CVD has the correct image of Sweitt as a Vurk Senator.
Commander Bly
Commander Bly changed from being a clone with red armor to a clone with yellow. Production later determined that Bly would have a slightly different armor coloring than his aides. "Commander Bly" from the
ROTS Visual Dictionary was correctly renamed to the name of one of his aides, Lt. Galle, a name created for the "Reversal of Fortune" webstrip.
Zutton/Takeel/Rachalt Hyst aka "Snaggletooth"
Snivvians seen at Mos Eisley. Zutton is the one in blue seen next to Han and Chewie's alcove in the cantina. Rachalt Hyst, wearing the trendy red jumpsuit was the name given for the Snivvian seen in the
Holiday Special often identified as Zutton probably because of lack of good Zutton images of the blue "Snaggletooth" and the fact for the
Special, they called him "Zutmore". Takeel is the one in red with the hump ("What hump?"). Note: the Snivvian seen at Bespin is Wiorkettle and the one in in Jabba's palace is Geezum
Klaatu/Wooof/Yotts Orren Kadas'sa'Niktos (Green Niktos)
Yotts Orren is the name of the "Klaatu in skiff guard outfit" from the vintage action figure line. The Green Nikto seen in Jabba's palace was called Klaatu, though Wooof was one of the production names used for this character.
Klaatu/Barada/Nikto species
Klaatu = Kadas'sa'Nikto (green Nikto)
Barada = Klatooinian
Nikto = Kajain'sa'Nikto (red Nikto)
