 | Should there be another Tales... series of books - written by fans? |
I've always wondered whether it would be possible for some of the best fan fiction writers to get together, or be brought together, to create a series of Tales Of... short story compilations. I know that it would be unlikely to happen, because thankfully George Lucas seems to have a very clear vision of where he wants his story's to progress. However, as I said to the introduction to my blog, I've always wanted to be the one who proposes the "What if" questions.
For the sake of argument, there could be another "Tales of The Bounty Hunters" based on the characters created in the Fan Fiction universe. Or additional tales from some of the Sectors of space that have been created by past and present Fan Fiction authors and websites. It might even be introduced as a series like "Elseworlds", (comics anyone?).
Would the great GL allow such a thing or would he simply leave things as they are, and allow fans to continue creating their own worlds and situations? What do the fans in general think of this idea?

I think this is an excellent idea. Imagination went out the window with many fans when everything had to be "canon". It certainly would be a great contest (that's the only way I know how they could determine "the best fan fiction writers"). They could repeat the same "Tales of" or add others: "Tales of the Droids", "Tales from Hoth Base", "Tales of Endor", etc.

Yes-a great idea indeed. However, I recently found out (through a VERY talented writer-friend of mine) that GL has locked down all writing having to do w/the saga, the EU...everything. He only works with certain publishers and "well-established writers." It's a true travesty because there ARE so many fans who are VERY talented, and who have SO MUCH to offer the GFFA-and who would keep the integrity of GL's dynasty intact. A very unfortunate thing, really. But I do understand in some regard. Could you imagine if GL opened THAT can of worms? He'd be swamped by every fan-fic writer in every crevace of the world. (cont)

It would be very cool, though if GL got all of his writers together and ran some sort of contest to find the best, most original story (or set of stories) that would complement the genre. One can dream, I suppose!

I've always wondered whether it would be possible for some of the best fan fiction writers to get together, or be brought together, to create a series of Tales That is a fantastic idea, though I'm afraid GL and Lucas Arts etc. would not allow such a thing to happen. We must keep in my mind that STAR WARS and anything related is GL's Baby. He has things so secure, LOCKED DOWN (thanks `MO2YP`) that even if there were a loop hole around it, no one would tell US. It is true, he only affiliates his creation with the most prestigious authors/novelists known to the writer's market today. (cont.)

True, there are some unknown, very talented new writer's out there! Some of which, we probably read here on the OS and on other links, so we can indulge in their creative fan-fiction. Though, the idea of running a contest would be fun and fair too. I guess, something like that will remain unanswered to us just like most of the What if's, or it could have or should have happened, been this way, that we have come to find here in the GFFA.
Still, I must thank the Maker for creating a wonderful fantasy galaxy for us to dwell in and debate.....for many years to come. ~Angel~

I think if it's good writing and fits in with the SW vision than why not? A good story is a good story whether the person who wrote it is famous or not.

Top idea mate, I believe you first mentioned this about 12 years ago - Tales from the Setnin Sector - that would have been good.
Maybe we should do a version for the site, a PDF file folks could download and print out.
Hmmm, maybe we're on to something here...

Exactly, and if GL won't do it - we should continue to do it for fun! Wow, doesn't the world change - I'm old enough to remember when GL stood for Green Lantern...
I think the contest idea is great too, although there would have to be a decent amount of time for people to prepare. Lets say, six months? And the story would have to be original, and not use any of the characters mentioned in the novels. Although I might have problems 'cause one of my characters has a namesake in the NJO novels...
Still, it would be an interesting challenge. There just isn't enough original fiction out there nowadays - and the Star Wars universe leaves plenty of room for original stories, characters and situations.
