Masked to Stay Alive.
Well, as serious as this title seems, this is just another blog, about Star Wars.

In Episode VI, Luke and Vader square off in an epic duel, one that will kill either father or son. As Palpatine watches Luke becomes enraged at his daddy and strikes off his arm. Being the betrayer he is, Palpy comes down and orders Luke to kill his father. Luke refuses and Vader gets up and throws Palpatine down a shaft to save his son, or, to find a nickel, *waves to mandalore65*.

So, Luke, being a compassionate man drags the limp body of Vader to a ship. Then Vader wants Luke to take of his mask. Luke then responds, "But you'll die." "Nothing can stop that now." *then everyone starts to cry* Wait! "But you'll die." Die? All because he takes his mask off. Vader's response is natural due to his injuries, but if he was well, would he suffer fatal injuries if he took off his mask? Nah.

I know that that is bogus because we see Vader with no mask on in Episode V. So, why did Luke say that Vader would die with no mask? Because he didn't know that Vader was already fatalily injured.

So this brings us to an even greater mystery, what task did Vader's mask do? Did it merely cover up his identity or did it keep him alive? What did the mask do? Is is useless?

Or, would Vader really die if his mask was lost?

Anyway, my thoughts those are, comment if you'd like, I would like it if you did.

Anyway, no profanity. And, what if in Episode V, Vader told Luke, "Luke, I am your," he takes off his helmet, "Mother!!!!!!!!" Vader's face looks like Padme.

May the Force be with us all! God bless!

Great entry!! I've always wondered how Vader eats. Like you said we've seen him take his mask off, so it can't be that vital. Oh, well. BTW, "mother" I love it.:^O

When his lungs were scorched on Mustafar, his lungs had no way to consume oxygen and if no one had found him in the next few minutes, he probaly would have died. With the mask, they serve as an artificial mouth so that air can be consumed by the lungs.

would Vader really die if his mask was lost?

No, he would just stop breathing.:D

I think his mask was how he breathed... thats why he seemed so LABORED when he said "Leave me...". He seemed like he was having a hard time...

If you've read books you'll understand that Vader needs the helmet to live ... it is pressurized for his respirator to operate and he can only take it off in his hyperbolic chamber. Read more in TESB novel or in Shadows of the Empire. You can also learn more of his limits in Dark Lord. The suit does indeed keep him alive and he needs his mask to live.

This is yet one more inconsistency in the star wars universe and there are many. I took that scene as vader's stuff was messed up by the emperor's force lightning but we know these ships have medical capabilities and he could have been re-hooked up to some kind of a lifesupport thing.

Again we have Rancor monsters that Luke cannot mind control and it looked to me like when Luke fell into the rancor pit that the rancor wasn't in the corner of his bedroom reading shakespear. it would have been as easy as it was for anakin in epi 2 in the arena.

I mean Luke went mind control happy all the way into jabba's palace.

I do not think there is an answer to your blog other than GL slipped up.

It has been established that Vaders Mask kept him breathing on a regular basis, but that he COULD survive and breath on his own FOR A LIMITED TIME without it.

That is how he was able to actually speak to Luke with the helmet off, as one of couse needs to BREATHE in order to form SOUNDS.

But..his suit was FRIED. All the circuits were dead, as Vader soon would be, so remvoing the mask made no difference...in other words it didnt SPEED UP his death either.

Good blog. The helmet really did help keep him alive. He could remove it for short durations of time, like in Episode V. Alas, he was pretty well scorched after the Force Lightning coursed through his already damaged body, and Vader knew the end was eminent.

Alas, I agree with the others. The helmet and suit was indeed necessary, or he would not be able to live...it sustained his breathing, he had tubes and what nots inserted through them and the mask held a voice indicator to help him speak since his vocal cords were destroyed as well. After the sith lightening shot through him, it did not matter if the helmet was on or off he was going to die either way.....I digress.........ANGEL

Well then how to you explain the recent Insider cover art where it shows him killing a Rebel soldier and a big chunk has been torn off of his mask exposing his burnt face? How did he live?

I concur with just about everyone here. Vader needed that mask and suit to survive...it contained his required life support systems. When he needed a "break" from the mask, he had a hyperbaric chamber where he could "roam" freely without his mask. Great questions, though.

I agree with everyone too. I noted in ROTS as the mask came down and formed the seal, just before it closed you could hear a small gasp for air from Vader. He def. needed the mask to breathe. BUT- I also think the mask removal in ROTJ was symbolic as well.

great blog!

Indeed.

Well then how to you explain the recent Insider cover art where it shows him killing a Rebel soldier and a big chunk has been torn off of his mask exposing his burnt face? How did he live?

Interesting question, maybe his breathing thingy was still hooked up and the rest of his mask was gone.

he COULD survive and breath on his own FOR A LIMITED TIME without it.

Ah, that would explain Son of a Bith's question.

The helmet really did help keep him alive.

That sounds reasonable to me.
